Text-to-Speech, Traffic Messages (TMC), Bluetooth speakerphone. Just a great device.

Are the refurbished units really worth it? Meaning will they last just as long as the original units?

Are there really a lot of changes from one year to another? say from 2008 maps to the new 2009 maps that will come?

If it really makes a big difference to be able to get the new 2009 maps, then I would agree, getting a new one would be a better decision.
