although this is true, i have found that for myself, chiefvalue takes about a day longer to process my order through and ship it. whereas newegg, i've gotten orders processed same day, never with chiefvalue.

Cliffnotes:
The drive will randomly "freeze" for about 30 seconds or so, where no data can be read/written from it. This normally will cause the operating system to freeze up while the hard drive is thinking, and any I/O actions you are doing will fail (streaming movie/music, dvr'ing a tv show, etc..)
Also, this is very detrimental for a RAID array because a lot of controllers will think that the drive has failed and drop it out of the array. I was going to buy 4 of these for a RAID5 array myself, but after reading all the comments (also just google "seagate freeze" if you want many many more pages about the problem).

I am waiting for a different 1.5TB drive, or a firmware update for this drive before I upgrade.

c0bra99: that problem (from just the first page of the topic) seems to only happen on linux/bsd boxes. So, windows users should be ok

False. It seems to be a mixture of the hard disk controller and the drive firmware.

so are we thinking that the affected drives have been purged from inventory...I've been thinking about jumping on this drive for a while. I bet the price is a reflection of all the bad press toward this drive. It also seems to be pretty loud based on what I've read. Comments?
