Tomato with USB functionality for this router (discussion and download) (Use Asus firmware restoration tool to upload this to the router - easiest way)

Here is a detailed set of specific instructions on how to install DD-WRT on the Asus WL-520gU.
Basically you need to follow these steps:
1. Download a compatible version of DD-WRT
2. Reset the WL-520GU to its defaults (see Resetting Defaults below)
3. Put the WL-520GU in hardware restoration mode (hold down the reset button while powering on the WL-520GU and wait until the the power light steadily blinks green).
4. Upload the DD-WRT firmware with the Asus Firmware Restoration Utility or TFTP.
If you are getting a "No wireless device in recovery mode found" message, this is fixed by holding the "restore" button and NOT the red "ez setup" button, in order to get into recovery mode
But the directions seem easy enough to load up DD-WRT and everything is spelled out in the DD-WRT Wiki.
