I keep seeing these protein powder threads. All this emphasis on 2.5g of protein per lbs of body weight is the scam of the century. There needs to be focus on what quality protein is consumed at point of the day and for what purpose. A protein is not a protein is not a protein.

Whey Protein Isolate is a very bioavailable form of protein that is absorbed by the body with extreme rapidity. What this means is that your body will quickly absorb whatever it can and you will urinate out the rest. Excess protein is expelled from the body in urine. Your body can NOT absorb 50g of Whey Protein Isolate in one chug unless you're a freaking 7 ft tall Viking.

Whey Protein Isolate, for the very reasons mentioned above, is PERFECT for drinking first thing in the morning and immediately following a resistance training workout. First thing in the morning because your body has just undergone an 8 hour fast and it needs protein quick to recover from a catabolic state. Immediately following a workout because your body has exhausted all its resources, depleted your glycogen stores and will slip into catabolysis to replenish what was lost. Unless, of course you follow your workout with a quick absorbing protein and a good source of glucose like red grape juice.

However, if you chug Whey Protein Isolate every 3 hours you're just pissing your money down the toilet (LITERALLY). It is also very harmful upon your kidneys to overwork them in that way. The supplement companies WANT you to drink this stuff every couple of hours so that you quickly exhaust your supply, piss it out and keep buying more.

Ideally, buy 1 tub of Whey Protein Isolate (or a Isolate and Concentrate blend), 1 tub of Casein (or a Casein and Whey Protein Concentrate blend).

Drink the Isolate first thing in the morning and immediatley after a workout. Drink the Casein (or Casein/Concentrate blend) throughout the day knowing that the Casein will be out of your system within 6 hours.

Please don't waste your money or bludgeon your kidneys. Buy this stuff armed with the right knowledge.

Wasn't it just 1-1.5 g of protein per pound of body weight? 20-60g from protein supplements and the rest from regular food.

I have also seen these in the Costco's in the Seattle area. Generally they have both the EAS Whey/Soy/Casein blend or these Whey Isolates in the tub. I just get the EAS blend because I'm not a macho bodybuilder but want to supplement my diet with protein for jogging and a few days of weights per week.
