HD PVR is the world’s first High-Definition video recorder for making real-time H.264 compressed recordings at resolutions up to 1080i. Just so there is no more questions COMPONENT cables just like HDMI cables can be used for FULL 1080p High Definition video. Older TVs however may only go up to 720p/1080i over component so check your manual.

Not according to the FAQ section on the manufacturer's website. It's pretty much the same reason why Media Center still doesn't support Blu-ray playback. No H.264 support. Microsoft really needs to get with the program on this.

Theres no hard drive. It takes take HD signal from your component outputs of your cable/satellite HD receiver and does on the fly encoding and sends the data thru a usb cable to your computer where it saves the file.

No, for OTA channels get the Hauppauge 950Q from costco for $50 (it's on the front page.) This is best used with a HD cable box or sat box, and will record whatever the box is outputting, so can be used to record any channel.
