$85-$90 is pretty much the regular price for the EF 50mm f/1.8 [canon.com] normal prime lens.

The wide f/1.8 aperture and the low price make this a good second lens for your Canon EOS or Rebel camera. At f/1.8, it can gather ten times as much light as the f/5.6 kit lens can when zoomed to 50mm. This is useful for shooting in low-light situations, such as indoors without a flash. The wide aperture also creates a shallow depth of field, which is useful for isolating a portrait subject in focus while the background is an out-of-focus blur.

IIRC, Version II has been out for a decade at least. I'm not sure there are many copies of the original still on the market--I don't know the difference, but it basically isn't relevant.

However I ve decided to upgrade to 1.4 version for the following reasons very slow and inaccurate focusing very bad unusable manual focus without focus lenght markings. I am still waiting for the new lens to arrive but I hope the 1.4 version will address these issuess

Besides being cheap and light, it has a pretty good aperture and it does not create the IR hotspot like f/1.4 version. since it has so few elements (and therefore coatings), it is very bright in IR.

What is this infrared photography you speak of? Is that when you can see through girls clothes?

Your encouragement is appreciated. I've already got the 85mm 1.8, but would like something a little bit wider, lighter, and with less glass exposed. It's not clear whether this lens would see much action. Although a real bargain, buying this could keep me out of the wider primes for a while, and I could probably use nice glass outside of the portrait range.

Indecently, my kit lens is actually quite sharp. All the others non-IS 18-55's I've seen have been junk, but mine performed very nicely. It doesn't get used much, but it is so light I am reluctant to upgrade.
