Wow, looked under the compatible printers and it shows canon has released/announced a Canon Pro9*00 Mark II series of their large format printers

no you don't have to have a canon printer, but those printers probably have software included to print on canon specialty photo paper

Generally speaking, photo paper is compatible with any inkjet printer. However, the compatibility issue arose when papers were created with cellular technology that would absorb dots of ink straight down rather than allowing the ink to spread. The cells could be arranged in such a way as to be more compatible with Epson printers (at say 720 x 1440 resolution) or with other printers using their own resolutions. These days, with printer technology using very fine drops at high resolutions and with some printers overlaying (i.e. HP) dots between dots to create smoother images, I doubt paper will matter so much on any printer. Additionally, some papers are suggested by manufacturers for their ability to enhance the color of inks, among other things.

In the end, I doubt anyone will notice much difference these days using the same paper between two printers (all else being equal -- for example, two color profiles will quite naturally render two different images on paper, so the color profiles would have to be identical as well).
