It's a tough decision. Depends on what/where/when you shoot.

Most people seem to love the 2.8 IS though

Yea, me too.

I'm leaning towards the 70-200 2.8 IS paired with my 1.4TC. Sell my F4 version. Smaller and more flexible. It doesn't give me the reach of the 300+TC, but its nicer wide open.

I've never had the error you're talking about with my 40D & 2.8L IS. Have you updated the firmware on your 40D?

Although it's by far my most expensive lens...electronic item as a matter of fact, I call it my "Money-Maker." It's paid for itself and then some.

I own the 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens, and I can tell you -- for sports, there simply isn't much better. The f/2.8 allows for faster shutter speeds, so you can more easily stop the action...so long as it's not at night. :-D Anyways -- this is a VERY solid price. I think I paid 1599 for mine about 2 years ago.

Someone should mention that L-Series lenses are the professional preferred lenses for all types of events, from weddings to pro sports. If you're in the market for a new high-end lens, this one should not disappoint.

Side note -- I do use this with a 1.4x extender, which is good since it only drops me 1 stop.
