I've been using GPS systems for many years including more than 1/2 dozen (various) TomTom units purchased for myself and family members. Soooo...I'd like to share a few insights about Tom Tom units.

Once registered, you have thirty days of free map upgrades... hence you are assured the latest maps for your newly purchased unit. Further, TomTom now allows the option of continual upgrades @$9.95/quarter. Personally, we have not opted for the quarterly upgrades, as the maps are "fresh" enough for our use.Corrections may be submitted and shared (free) via the TomTom Home program.

"Quick Fix" satellite ephemeris (satellite position info) may be downloaded to the unit as often as needed (free), making for more rapid signal lock.

Text-To-Speech is neat, but not an essential feature. When incorporated (optional on TTS units), you must select a compatible "computer voice" which requires considerably more memory space, hence equivalent TomTom models (ie: One XLS vs One XL) are designed with less POIs to accomodate TTS. POIs such as my Dentist's office are not in my One XLS' POI database but are listed on our One XL (additional POIs are available.. many at no cost... and can be added. You can also create your own).

Tom Tom Refurbs we have purchased typically carry the full TomTom waranty, contain all the same accessories as a virgin unit, and cannot be distinguished from new (save for the packaging).

Minimally, a good GPS should have reasonably accurate maps with a decent array of POIs, boot-up/lock-on to signal quickly (and maintain signal lock or extrapolate position when confronted with short tunnels, "concrete canyons", etc), give ample warning of upcoming actions (one of our GPS units used to tell you to turn AFTER you passed the street!), and make intelligent routing decisons. BlueTooth, realtime traffic updates, etc, can be quite helpful but are not essential.
