From what I understand, the stock Netgear firmware is pretty bad, but with DD-WRT things work very well. I don't have one myself, but have been watching this guy for a while and will take the jump at some point. There's no other router you can get that will let you use the 5 Ghz N band anywhere near this price point.

i have mixed feelings about this. On one side the price you cannot beat. The other side cnet review.

So many conflicting claims in those NewEgg reviews. Not sure what to believe.
I found this assertion interesting: "Since there is only one draft 11n radio [in this router], simultaneous coverage in the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands uses the draft 11n radio in 5 GHz and the 11b/g radio in 2.4 GHz. If you want draft 11n in 2.4 GHz, the 11b/g radio is disabled and you have a single-band draft 11n router." So you cannot get draft n at both 5 Ghz and 2.4Ghz at the same time. If true, this is somewhat problematic if you have a mixed n/b-g network and some of your n adapters don't support 5 GHz transmission. In that case, you could run the 5 GHz-capable n devices at full draft n speeds, but everything else (including the other n adapters) would have to run at b/g speed. The Cnet review bashes the unit for having very poor range. Wondering if that can be improved via transmission power adjustment in DD-WRT. Last edited by ktg; 06-25-2009 at 10:39 PM.. |
