1.8Ghz looks very slow!

for reference, the 95w 9600 (2.3ghz) quad has been as cheap as this after coupon in the past and is currently $89shipped.
but yes- a 65w quad is nice power savings, but If 65w and performance is the goal, I would hedge my bets on a faster 65w dual core. Heres a 2.8ghz AM2 x2 65w ($64shipped): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6819103235 and a NEW series 3ghz 65w am3 ($87shipped) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6819103681 EDIT-Use code AMD791 to take $10 off = $77 w/ Free 3day shipping. Those, who run multi-threaded apps, or multiple single-threaded apps and know what they are doing will be better off with a "slow" quad core. That said, this is a stupid good deal for a 65W quad core, which also overclocks decently well (YMMV on that as usualy) being a low-wattage part. Granted at that point you are breaking the 65W, but who counts, right?

ps- I run a PhII 940 quad, so its not like I am biased against quads ![]() I just know the older phenom1 core is slow and 1.8ghz is really slow. |

In general, that's the problem w/ quad core (and beyond). Most ppl are trying to apply multi-core to the desktop platform, but that only has limited advantage because of the way a desktop is typically used. The desktop is heavily interactive by nature and ppl tend to drive a single application hard for an extended period, then switch to another application, so having more than dual core isn’t much of a benefit (imo). In most cases, quad core and beyond is best left to the server side where concurrency is king. With time this could change, of course, the very availability of quad core and beyond may change the way desktops are used, but for now I just think quad core is going to benefit servers far more than desktops. That's what I am doing (if I don't go for the Phenom II X3). |

Vista gives it a 5.8. I built a system using one a month or two back.
