A QUAD-Core is a *must* for an HTPC that must also act as Media Server. It is also a must if you have multiple HD-Tuners and would like to record simultaneous HD programs while also serving up Media to other media extenders or PCs.
Why? Vista MCE code is highly threaded. You also have that Anti-Virus and the Desktop Search Engine running all the time. Some of you possibly also runs some other utility on your HTPC -- like a security cameras, etc. BTW, this quad processor can also be good as a Server CPU -- like if you're into virtualisation. With at least 4Gigs of RAM, you can run at least 3 virtual machines off of your choice of virtualization software -- vMware ESXi, vBox/Xen, Virtual PC or Server or even Hyper-V. |

Comparing it with a E8400 is not an apt comparison. the E8400 (list at $167) was never a good deal in the first place. For $200, you can get the nahelam quad core i7 920 at microcenter. (definitely the fastest CPU to get). If you don't have a microcenter, you can get a core2quad for around $167, non-sale price (a little cheaper when it's on sale), it's a little less than twice as fast as an E8400.
This is definitely not a price mistake, first generation Phenoms were really slow! The review on passmark is terribly misleading, this is not as fast as a E8400. (Low 512Kb L2 cache per core [4 cores], means performance will suffer when running lots of multiple applications simultaneously, which is the reason to get quad core in the first place, to get smooth multi-tasking). Single threaded performance will run at about half the speed of an E8400. (2 core E8400/4 core 9150e=0.5 the speed of E8400 per core.) check out tomshardware for benchmark on the 9150e and see how it performs with other processor with different types of applications. http://www.tomshardware.com/chart...0,820.html (For example, running World in Conflict, 9150e gets 77fps, E8400 gets 131fps, everything being equal, just the processor limiting the fps) not a good processor, and not a good price. When I was shopping for a processor, I've seen a 2.3Ghz Quad Core Phenom go on sale for $90 at newegg. (This is just a 1.8Ghz) How did this end up on the frontpage? After I did some research on performance, I decided not to get AMD CPUs altogether. (Except for Phenom II, but I could get Core2Quad for that price). |

I'm surprised that none of these CPU discussions have started to include virtualization performance. The ability for even a desktop machine to effectively run multiple OS's or even multiple instances of the same OS seems crucial to the decision making process.
That said... so far I have seen excellent results with my low power AMD X2 4850e running up to 5 simultaneous virtual machines on 8GB of RAM in Windows XP 64 bit. I would wager this processor would be a very nice buy for running a budget virual machine setup, but it would be good to get feedback from anyone with actual experience. |

I need some advice on whether or not to use this processor. After ordering it did some research and now I'm not sure if it will be any improvement over what I have in my HTPC now.
I currently have this CPU [newegg.com] and this motherboard [newegg.com] runnning Windows 7 (64bit). I'm very happy with my current setup but I recently purchased a second Hauppauge 1600 tuner so I can record while still watching TV and thought the additional cores would help. Any thoughts? I've loaded up this CPU in a ASUS M3A78-EM AMD 780G AM2+/AM2 Phenom FX/Phenom/Athlon /Sempron Socket AM2/AM2+ 5200 MHz PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) mATX Motherboard Retail @ $58.99 from a separate SD ( http://forums.slickdeals.net/show...&t=1416521 ) . I'm using Ubuntu 64-bit and it works great. One problem. Right now there is a problem in linux getting audio over the HDMI port at the moment. Bug reports have been submitted. Otherwise it runs smooth. PMS (a PS-3 media server package) runs fine. It shares the media to the PS-3. I've got my home web server on it, my OpenNMS, squid, dns cache, MRTG running fine. 4 cores are a nice way to run things.
(I also had 8GB of memory to slap in there for some multitasking fun!) Please use bit torrent when downloading Ubuntu, http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/d...mirrors#bt it's nice to share some bandwidth back into the community. (got any questions, PM me and we'll talk). Anyone that got in on this deal, YOU DONE GOOD. I'm running the BOINC client with SETI, AQUA, ROSETTA, which has all four cores going 24/7 with a temp of 52c on the cpu. In a week, I'll do some 'mild' overclocking to get it up over 2.0GHz, then just concentrate on getting all my linux apps setup the way I want. Did I say I got this thing hooked up to my 50" 1080p plasma in the livingroom! Yes, 50 inches of Ubuntu goodness. Geek heaven, wonderful! Nirvana! Last edited by faheyd; 07-19-2009 at 01:52 PM.. |
