Tax in FL

I've been looking for a nice HT system for quite some time. I've been using a cheap "set" for the last 6 years, and have been wanting a nice receiver and speaker set for quite some time. I'd like to get something much nicer, but I don't need to get something very loud, as I live in an apartment and would probably tick off my neighbors pretty quick.

Would it be better off buying this while it's on sale, and waiting and getting a nice cheaper set of speakers to go with it later, or would it be better to wait until Onkyo has one of their entire HT System sales, which include the receiver and speakers as a set? I know I've seen those go for about $400 or so before.

I've only heard of upconvertnig the resolution through a capable upconverting DVD player. How does upconversion exactly work on this thing?

If I have an HTPC with only a DVD drive, will this thing upconvert the signal to 1080i? Will this go with any video signal, such as a ripped DVD playing from the hard drive, or any regular old .avi file?

OP this receiver is not HDMI passthrough because it processes HDMI audio. I recommend you update your title to avoid confusion.
