Xbox headset mics keep breaking. Advice?

My sons's xbox 360 mic keeps breaking.

They seems to last about 6 months or so.

The wireless version is at amazon.com for $38 shipped (also at buy.com).

The cheapest wired version sell from HK on fleabag for $2.50.

The review for the wireless ones are mixed. Some say the batteries go out after about a year, are uncomfortable to wear, only come with a usb recharge cable, etc.

Or I could just buy a bunch of the cheap microphones are ebay and throw them away when they stop working.

My 10 year old son doesn't understand why they keep breaking. I try to tell him that they don't seem to be made very well.

Any advice? What are your thoughts?

My original headset (the one that ships w/ the console) lasted about 2 1/2 years before it broke down. Been on my second one and it has lasted a year so far **knocks on wood**. Yes, they are made crappy but I think it's how you treat them really. My friend has one of those Turle Beach headset that run about $50 and he says their 100000x better than the M$ ones.

they used to.. all the newer ones i've seen since the halo one came out have a usb charging cable

A bonus is you can listen to all the audio through the headphones as well, so you can turn the volume on the tv all the way down and you won't be bothered by your son playing games. You can also adjust the regular audio and the voice chat audio independently if you're having problems hearing people.
