This is a switch only. For most purposes, just consider it a 'hub'. Not a router.

This might help you if you do alot of file transfers or stream video or music over your LOCAL network. It won't really help with internet where you will be throttled by either your 10/100 wired router, your wireless speed or the speed of the package you purchased from your ISP

We've had no issues with any of them. I'd probably buy a TRENDnet before a D-Link. These new Green units also support jumbo frames. unlike the older models I have.

No crossover cable needed anymore on these newer switches. It will auto-negotiate for you. Just plug and play. Now you can stream your porn 10 times as fast.

I've never seen enough difference in specs between different "consumer" switches to make a noticeable difference. I've just had better luck with my TRENDnet switches than with other D-Link products I've used in the past.
