The Canon Rebate team has deliberated over information I brought to the manager this morning, and they have decided to officially allow the rebates at amazon to be processed WITH the instant rebates.

Personally I'd like to thank Amazon for its always prompt responses. Many people(including me) stick to the deal, because amazon gave mostly positive confirmation throughout. I exchanged emails with amazon several times, and always feel confident about the prospect of the rebate validity. Those confirmation served as a backstop(worst case is I return it for free). Ok, I was able to get a SquareTrade 3 year warranty with Accidental Damage Protection for $78. I purchased the Amazon.com 3yr warranty for $49.99. I then called them up and told them I wanted to add the ADH protection at the same 40% discount. I was told I couldn't do it, but after letting them know I was considering canceling the warranty and just waiting for one of the 40% or 50% deals to come along (at the risk of forgetting to purchase a warranty alltogether), suddenly a solution presented itself. It DOES NOT include the ADH and is priced at 40% off. You may try to just call them and get the 40% off price initially, and if they don't budge, just try my route. You can always cancel no matter what. I'm very careful with everything I own, but I found $78 to be a very good price to cover everything but theft for 3 years. SLRs do have components exposed when the lens is off....I feel the protection is worth ~%10 of the price of the cam.

Filters
Do not skimp on getting the cheap uncoated filters for the camera. It's often the quality of the glass that sets cameras apart! You could completely ruin the images you're taking by using cheap filters. Below are two that you should consider... I ended up purchasing them both. Don't waste the time with a $12 cheapy...I wouldn't put that on a $100 cam, let alone an $800 SLR. Quality filters make a world of difference when shooting outdoors, as well as protect your lens.

Getting an ultrazoom would be fine, depending on the quality you want. Ultrazooms like the Coolpix P90 can zoom pretty insane amounts, but it's important to know that the sensors in them (the thing that actually gathers the picture information) are just as small as a regular point and shoot, therefore, have the same picture quality. The reason DSLRs capture such better images is that their sensor sizes are so much bigger (about the size of your thumbnail, or bigger) compared to a regular point and shoot (usually the size of your pinkie nail).

I have a bro who works at a camera shop...he says that the people who he points towards the Coolpix D90s are the "soccer mom type who just want to zoom in on their kid playing a sport, and who don't really care too much about the image quality."

You may as well go with the official Canon/Nikon stock... I hate my tripod--image stabilization really does make a difference.

I only bring up these points because the accessories are the highlight of your DSLR collection. Once you decide to expand beyond the basic kit setup, you're basically locking yourself into a particular brand. Lights, remotes, batteries, lenses... these are usually interchangeable within a product line, but never between brands. The second you decide to buy a zoom lens (or something like that), best be sure you want to stick with that brand first.

I had that issue before--that's why I've just sent mine by regular first class (without tracking/signature confirmation). You'll know whether it has arrived within about 2 weeks of mailing. Wait a week to see if status changes--if not, mail in your scans--call them and ask if you need to put down something like "second attempt". Having confirmation of mailing REALLY only matters if you're mailing close to the deadline. I don't know of a rebate company out there that won't allow second mailings if you claim you mailed your originals. Doesn't the submission date end in March? Why bother with a signature confirmation at this point?
