I find Kobalt to be better than average quality. This is a great set for the price. Any of the cheap junky brands will not hold up for even a few uses. The good thing about Kobalt is that you can purchase replacement bits for very cheap. The reason I purchased this set is because my Skil 5/64" hex bit broke last weekend while installing blinds and I didn't want to have to buy an entire new set for $20 or $30 when I only needed one bit, but I couldn't resist this deal considering the bit sizes that are included. Let's not go overboard. The quality is decent and and a little above average. For the price and given the pieces involved it's a good deal. Life span is up to the user really as drill speed, force applied to bit by user, and what is being drilled (using correct bit). This is definitly not a HD set as that will cost much more but for most tasks around the house this is perfect.

Caveat Emptor. It's all relative to how much and how hard you are on these. But I agree with your comment, from my own personal experience, this set along with similar ones sold at Sears - both appear to come from the same manufacturer - are garbage. I've used 18V nickel cadmium Ryobi and 24V lithium-ion RIDGID drills with these sets and they last less than one day regardless of the job. Maybe someone can chime in with a great drill bit set for the money that will stand the test of time.
