I just bought the TomTom One 140 Red from Target yesterday for $99.99. I'm new to the world of portable GPS devices although we do have a navigation system in our 2001 Honda. The One 140shows maps and all just fine but I am confused by TomTom's website and just realized that I'd have to buy a traffic receiver antenna for about $60 plus pay a subscription fee for any traffic updates. It appears that we are entitled to one update for the most current maps and I guess I got that last night when I downloaded something. There will be a fee for any further updates to maps. There is a section on the website for user created apps and I looked at those but it's difficult to really know what is in them because there is little information. I think TomTom reviews the apps before they put them up though. My One 140 does not have an SD slot. Does that matter? I'm not sure. I'm seriously thinking of returning it and looking for a different brand that includes the traffic receiver without a subscription fee. I know it'll cost more but I'll have to watch for a Slickdeal. Others may have a great time with this GPS and my frustration may be due to my inexperience so take my posting with a grain of salt.

Yeah, there will be a fee for future updates, but if GPS prices keep dropping the way they have been then you'd be better off just buying a new GPS and selling your old one instead of buying their expensive map updates. To get the latest map update you need to open you TomTom Home software and go to Tools > Use Latest Map Guarantee. You have 30 days to get the latest map update. The update seems to take a LONG time. I think it still uses USB 1.1. The 140 comes with 2GB of internal memory. Most of the space is used up by the maps. You can try removing the foreign language voices to free up some space. The remaining space should be plenty of additional POIs. It's a good basic GPS. It doesn't really have the bells at whistles of some out there, but it gets the job done. You can find additional free POIs at http://www.poi-factory.com Target did have the 140S model for the clearance price of $49.99, but those are probably mostly gone at the stores by now. http://slickdeals.net/forums/show...?t=1629197 Last edited by SlickDealio; 11-19-2009 at 05:35 AM.. |
