You will need a sub-woofer. Receiver takes 2 HDMI inputs and outputs video over HDMI (no audio). Just use PCM and let the player do the decoding and output multi-channel audio to the receiver over HDMI. I am not sure if this receiver accepts multi-channel PCM audio over HDMI. If not, then you are better off with a different setup since this receiver doesnt support the latest HD audio formats. Having said that, i still think it's not a bad deal.

This is nice for a bedroom ... I doubt the limited inputs would work for many family rooms. |

Honestly, screw yamaha - never had much luck with them... I just bought Onkyo - we'll see how it goes.

Ok, total home theater novice here, so bear with me. If I buy this system, how do I hook it up between my blu-ray and lcd tv?
1. For Video -- hdmi out blu-ray --> hdmi in receiver -->hdmi out receiver--> hdmi in TV 2. For Audio -- audio out blu-ray --> audio in receiver <-- audio out TV Is this the right scheme to hook up? |

I think you have it right, except not sure why you are talking about audio out from TV to Receiver?
Basically for watching Blu-ray you will have HDMI to blu-ray to receiver to TV Optical out from blu-ray to receiver to speakers Depending on what other sources you have i.e. do you have game systems, do you have basic cable over coax, or a satellite/cable box with component or composite or s-video etc I can help advise if you post here or pm me.

I suppose if your tv has some sort of playback capabilities (like connects to netflix/pandora) then you would want to pipe out audio. That could work. If you mean to pipe out cable or antenna, I think you'd be better off plugging those into the receiver first. |

LOL. That made me laugh. Yeah, that's what i said except what i meant was it's useful for someone looking for a basic setup. I wouldnt buy it as it lacks the features needed in modern receivers.
