Don't throw away your old TMobile phone (free unlock)
Call TMobile, and simply request an unlock code. You have to use a TMobile account that is active for more than 90 days, but you can ask to unlock any TMobile phone.
I cancelled service with TMobile a year ago, but I had an old tri-band TMobile phone that I wanted to use in Europe. My friend who has an active TMobile account called TMobile and asked to unlock MY old TMobile phone for use with a European sim-card. (of course he said it was his phone). Then he gave them an IMEI number (they tell you the procedure on getting it from the phone, so make sure the phone is on). Finally the code is emailed to any email you provide.
Note: The unlock procedure in the email omitted the first step: inserting a valid sim card from another carrier.
Why unlock?
Perfect for travelling overseas if you are planning to make many local calls. A GSM phone number is not attached to any person or phone, but to a SIM card. If you have a tri-band phone, you can buy a sim card in Europe, add money to the account, and voila, you have a working european number.

2 years back I got the T-Mobile phone unlocked on my way to the airport. No email or wait. The CSR walked me thru the steps and gave me the code over the phone. I had signed up on T-mobile plan only 2 weeks back at that time. Now that was 2 years back so the policies might have changed now. But you can try!

You just have to be persistent.
