A 2 qt is on the small side, but an excellent price. Generally people will purchase a 4.5 qt round or a 5 qt. oval to start out and then add to the collection. I have not seen the 2 qt this cheap; however, have seen equal or better pricing on the larger sizes. I already have most of the sizes. I purchases and then sold a 13 qt because when I received it, I saw it was a monster - took up too much space and was too heavy for my wife.

The ones you see most often in stores is the 4 or 5 quarts. This is a very small size, like a single serve. But, if you want to try a piece of their cookware, decent place to start.

I'll be honest the prices charged for dutch ovens is outrageous. Take a look at cast iron cook ware, the price is rock bottom. They add porcelain enamel and jack the price sky high.

Not that a lot of people will cross shop the two, but Aldi (starting tomorrow) will have very similar 5 quart dutch ovens (porcelain enamel, metal handel, even has the "basting spikes") for $29.99

Honestly, this size is something you'd most likely use on the stovetop more often than in the oven..but basically to answer your question, enameled cast iron provides all the best aspects of cast iron without needing to worry about difficult seasoning/cleanup or avoiding reactive foods (acidic foods like tomatoes, sauerkraut, etc react with raw cast iron and take on a metallic taste). This brand, Le Creuset, is considered to be the cadillac of all enameled cast iron brands, although I have several pieces from other manufacturers that have held up just as well as my Le Creusets.

The advantages of cooking with cast iron is the even heating, tight seal of the lids, and the ability to place in the oven for long periods of time without damaging the cookware. These pans are designed to last a lifetime, and Le Creuset actually has a lifetime warranty on their enamel when you purchase the pan new or receive it new as a gift.

Personally, I'd pass on this size and wait for a deal on a larger oven that you can braise family size portions in. This size there is really very little you could do other than use it as a small saucepan. Maybe a very small gratin or casserole, but that's about it.

I picked up one of these last year, the braiser, and have been very disappointed in it. I am not a le creuset snob, I have Technique, Staub, and Lodge Enameled cast iron pieces in addition to my set of le creuset. I got the braiser at Aldi and the enamel has started to flake off in 2 places and there is exposed metal on the underside of the lid between a couple of the basting spikes. I'm glad yours is working well for you, but I was pretty bummed. It's still usable, of course, but I have to be very sure it's totally dry and I season the bare spots with oil to prevent rust.

However, Sam's sells a re-branded Tramontia oven that is great. And Costco has a Kirkland branded one now that you can return at any time if you have problems.


And honestly, the piece of cast iron I reach for the most is still my classic Lodge skillet that's been seasoned to perfection over the last 15 years, lol.

They also have the 5 qt. oval oven for $159.99. That's less than what I spent on my 3 qt. round oven.
