I'll be honest the prices charged for dutch ovens is outrageous. Take a look at cast iron cook ware, the price is rock bottom. They add porcelain enamel and jack the price sky high.
Not that a lot of people will cross shop the two, but Aldi (starting tomorrow) will have very similar 5 quart dutch ovens (porcelain enamel, metal handel, even has the "basting spikes") for $29.99 http://aldi.us/us/html/offers/58_..._HTML.htm# The will have other models available as well. http://aldi.us/us/html/offers/off...U_HTML.htm I bought a 5 quart model last year and could not be happier. |

The advantages of cooking with cast iron is the even heating, tight seal of the lids, and the ability to place in the oven for long periods of time without damaging the cookware. These pans are designed to last a lifetime, and Le Creuset actually has a lifetime warranty on their enamel when you purchase the pan new or receive it new as a gift. Personally, I'd pass on this size and wait for a deal on a larger oven that you can braise family size portions in. This size there is really very little you could do other than use it as a small saucepan. Maybe a very small gratin or casserole, but that's about it. |

However, Sam's sells a re-branded Tramontia oven that is great. And Costco has a Kirkland branded one now that you can return at any time if you have problems. And honestly, the piece of cast iron I reach for the most is still my classic Lodge skillet that's been seasoned to perfection over the last 15 years, lol. |

They also have the 5 qt. oval oven for $159.99. That's less than what I spent on my 3 qt. round oven.

I have the 9-quart and LOVE IT. I'd probably only go as small as the 5-qt oval. For the person who asked what to cook in it: anything for a dutch oven. It goes from stove top to oven. I brown a pork roast on burner in mine and then add veggies (or do pot roast) for roasting in oven. I also bake bread in mine with the cover on for most and then off at end (nice crunchy crust and soft inside).
