Is MSN Direct a necessary component to the unit/traffic updates, or is it something extra? If it is critical to the core functionality of the unit, I might be less interested...

its an optional extra service by msndirect. They give you 6 months trail .

the unit will work absolutely fine with msn direct enabled or not. its a 4.3 inch unit with all the bells and whistles (blue tooth, spoken street names etc...) with out msn direct.

You will still be able to buy and connect the optional FM traffic receiver, but that costs almost as much as the GPS unit itself. If traffic is important to you past 2012, might want to consider one of the other models with lifetime FM traffic included in the unit (like the 265T).
