My family gives 5% of our earnings to ASPCA. They helped my family find some of our best friends and I find it is worth every penny. But I am giving this thumbs up as long as some money goes to help animals. Nothing wrong with helping animals.

I go to this site every day and read the stories of the rescued animals (and, of course, click to give the animals food). If you're in the market for something they're selling, it's a great way to help animals.
BUT, if you just want to help animals, might I suggest donating directly to any of the thousands of shelters across the country (many accept donations through pay pal!)? I considered buying something from the Animal Rescue Site for my aunt as a Christmas gift. The more I thought about it, the more inclined I felt to just give my favorite shelter a gift in her name. The shelter, http://www.saintfrancisanimalsanctuary.org, used the money to help one of its dogs get eye surgery. It was amazing to know about the direct impact of the gift! The for-profit company that runs the site, charityusa.com donates between 3 and 30% of the profits off the items purchased on their sites. [wa.gov] to charity. Overall, they donate 15% of what they take in to charity. On close outs, there is probably very little profit. If an item that cost $10 had 15% profit...after all costs were taken into account...then the donation to an animal charity would be between 45 cents (30 percent) and 4.5 cents (3%). 15% would be extremely high profit after costs, salaries etc. for a normal retailer. I imagine the percent they give may depend on their negotiations with the charity. On closeouts, with free shipping, the profit may be little or nothing. Of course, they do have to sell this stuff to buy more profitable stuff. Just saying, SolidGun has a point...if you give directly (an I give every year to the shelter that rescued my best friend) you can pay less and they get more. I never donate, regardless of the cause, to phone solicitors...because I know that only a small portion of what I give goes to the charity..the rest goes to the solicitors. Thats OK...companies that make their money increasing donations to charities are not a bad thing...it is just better from my view to give directly to the charity. HOWEVER..if you see anything on the OPs links you want BUY IT!...chances are in the long run some of your money will help animals. |
