Do NOT buy Acer.

On the two Acer notebooks that I have, they do not update the drivers or support computers after the one year warranty expires. Go to Acer support at http://support.acer.com/ and look at the driver dates for the Acer Aspire 5100 notebook. All are dated 2008 even though my Windows Vista keeps telling me that the ATI video driver for this chipset has been updated. ATI support says that the manufacturer must release the driver written to work with this computer. But Acer won't do the support.

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 notebook computer. I sent it back for warranty service on the DVD drive. They put the wrong screws (too small) in the DVD drive when they put it back together. It fell out one day after the warranty expired and the DVD drive won't work now. It shorted something on the main board. Acer said too bad. They refused to make it right even though their technician screwed up. They told me they would charge me a bench fee of $450 if I sent it back to them for repair, which was in excess of $100 more than I paid for the computer. They said cost of parts and labor would be added to that outrageous bench fee. There is no responsibility to support the customer. I asked, "So you don't care if I never buy another Acer product?" The unsupporting person on their support line said, "Well, that's up to you. I can't control what you do" I told him he just controlled what I would do!

I had to buy an external DVD drive.

I replaced it with a Compaq and when I bought a notebook for my wife I bought an HP. Both have great support and service (same company).

Just my $0.02, but I'll never buy another Acer product. I've seen similar comments in other forums.

If you are hellbent to buy one of these, there is another thread that buy.com has this same netbook for $213. http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=0&t=1936800 but that is after bing cashback.

Asus has a pretty good reputation. Not sure about MSI. Go to the "Help Me Find A Deal" forum on slickdeals and see what sort of feedback you get there. A lot of people there are really helpful and very knowledgeable.
