My Gmail account has been compromised

Tonedeaf 3,629 April 9, 2010 at 12:43 PM
Received a message from a family member that I was sending out spam to them.

Went into my Sent messages and saw emails to about 20 different contacts that I certainly hadn't created. In them were links to who knows what. One family member mentioned a Viagra link. EmbarrassmentOMG

I went to see details of account activity and saw an IP address in CA. I am in TX. IP that it showed was 112.151.173.219. I immediately signed off all sign on's to the account and changed the password. Looks like it sent 5 emails to 15 or so different people.

So embarrassing this has happened, but luckily I was able to catch it before too many were sent out.

I don't know how to do look ups of IP addresses but would love to find out more info on who or what is sending these out.

Definitely have to run anti-vir and malware bytes when I get home. Any thing else I should run?

Looks like I caught it pretty quickly. Nothing else has been sent or other access to the account etc.

This type of attack seems to be happening more and more, I've had gotten about 5 of the resulting messages (various email services) in the last 6 months. The thing that scares me is that most of them came from accounts of pretty tech savvy people. I'm really wondering if most of these are from key-loggers, phishing attacks, or weak passwords and if they installed anything or if it was a drive by attack.

I'm gonna guess weak passwords. I've changed mine to something a lot more secure. Upper case, lower case, number, 10 letters total. It'll take a while to brute force that Big Grin

On the password front, I'm trying to transition myself to using a http://supergenpass.com bookmarklet.

google has seen a widespread increase in attacks, so it's not incredibly surprising. It's been a while since any major major ones but heres from a few months ago:

OP,

Is your Gmail account linked to any bank/credit card accounts? If so, your financial institutions could have gotten a password reset request for your financial account(s) ...... and may have sent the reset information to your compromised Gmail account.

Fortunately the time frame I am working with is very short. Was able to catch it pretty quick, 15-20 minutes tops. If a password reset had been requested, I would have seen the email come into my inbox, I have it up on screen all day long while I am at work.
