nawutnoon 58 May 17, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Sphere Cylinder Axis Add
O.D. -0.25 1.75
O.S. -0.25 -0.25 095 1.75

How can I convert this to an RX for reading glasses only? TIA!

Amazingly, we do have an eye doctor in the Lounge.

Unfortunately, I'm not him.

So, I'm going to say... YES! Woot

Thanks! Need the info. for my mom. Smilie She used to have bifocals and didn't like them. They gave her headaches. She used her single vision glasses, and they are better for her. We no longer have the prescription for those though. Going to order her the progressive glasses but want to order her the reading glasses for backup just in case.

I'm not a eye doc but I am a optician so I can answer this question. Yes it can be made a reading, distance only, bifocal, trifocals or progressive. It will be your moms choice. Her Rx is not a strong one. She has a little Astigmatism in her left eye. She should have very little trouble with adapting to any of those choices.

Do you know what the reading only Rx would be? How can I convert it?

Yes, it can. All the info is in the Rx you've given.

The reading RX would be
O.D +1.50
OS +1.50 -0.25 x095

If you were to get over the counter reading glasses the closest would be +1.50.
But over the counter readers would not help with the astigmatism correction in the left eye.

Cupcake42,
I don't know the opticianry laws in your state, but I wouldn't suggest giving out recommended over-the-counter powers to unknown ppl online. You acknowledged that you were a optician. You could legally be held liable for the advice you give out to others.

I told OP it was not the best thing to go with the over the counters if would have looked at my post. Its not like readers will hurt anything with her Rx.

You can also google a RX and have it tell you the reading RX. It's not a secret.

But, you don't know the accuracy of that prescription. You don't know the year it was written. You don't know the working distance for that add power. What if it was the add power for the computer distance?

Let's say the person buys the OTC readers at the power you suggested and plans on using it for near work, which would be higher. Then, those readers would have insufficient powers for near work. Technically, you could be held liable for suggesting the +1.50 readers. Yes, it's not likely. But, I'm just letting you know of the potential legal and medical liabilities.

You only mentioned that it wouldn't correct for the astigmatism power. There are other factors that come into play. I read your post. You really didn't discourage anything.

Cupcake42,
By the way, a lot of doctors add an extra +0.25 to +0.50 to the add power when giving out a PAL Rx. It often helps with the reading since PAL's have a smaller corridor and limited area for maximum near reading. You don't know if that was done with the OP's given Rx. So, you could also be recommending readers that may be too strong.

I'm not going to debate this with you.

Have a great day.
