comparing two computers???
OK narrowed down to these two, I think...Which one do you like? Dell Inspiron I580-5108NBC with Intel® Core™ i5-650 processor Features a 4MB cache and 3.2GHz processor speed. 8GB DDR3 SDRAM,1TB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 rpm),NVIDIA GeForce GT220 graphics for $800 or Gateway DX 4831-01e with Intel® Core™ i3-530 processor; 6GB DDR3 memory; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive; 1TB hard drive; for $560. By the way, I don't want to build myself...not that good. Thanks for the help

+1 For Dell Inspiron I580-5108NBC
1) Faster CPU - Normally you won't upgrade due to limited choices.- To me CPU speed is my major concern for buying pre build system- you can have many choice for Memory , HDD, Video card.. but not much for CPU. 2)More memory 3) Faster Video card (You can upgrade it later if you are not happy about it) Last edited by WindRider; 05-19-2010 at 08:39 AM.. |

What do you plan to use the computer for? Both computers are overkill for normal tasks, the Dell moreso.
The Core i5 will be better at CPU intensive tasks, like video editing. The Gateway's 6GB of RAM is plenty for all but the craziest uses. The hard drives are the same size, and probably very close to the same speed. 3D gaming is largely dependent on graphics card, and the graphics card in the Dell is alot better for 3D games. But it should be easy and cheap ($60) to add an equally powerful graphics card to the Gateway. The Gateway does have a modest 300W power supply, which means power hungry cards will be offlimits, but I think it'll be sufficient for a card like the Dell's. |

However there is only one PCI slot availably for Dell system and Gateway system has more slots open for future upgrade ( but no PCI - very strange. .) The possible upgrade I can think is Wireless NIC- but you can still find the card for the right slot.Memory wise- I guess even 4GB can fit your purpose well- 6-8GB seems like overkill. Since both system can fit your purpose well- it really depends on your budget. But I will try to find some Dell refurb w/ higher CPU speed and right amount of RAM ( 4GB). That way you can got a system that really fit your application and not spending more then needed. Just my 2 cents....... |
