Thread Details

It's summertime and the basil is flourishing. What can be better than a bowl full of freshly made pesto? To make authentic pesto, you're going to need pine nuts (pignolis) along with the olive oil, basil, garlic and pasta. Have you shopped for pine nuts lately? Prices have skyrocketed: bulk pine nuts have gone from about $16 a pound in early spring to more than $50 a pound recently. What's a cook to do? Some say substitute walnuts or pistachios, some say skip the nuts entirely. I say, be a slickdealer.

Best deal I've found so far is through vitacost.com, where a 6 ounce package costs $9.28.
Flat rate shipping is $4.95, regardless of quantity, so it's to your advantage to buy a few.
For an added bonus, purchase your pine nuts through vitacost.com through their link on a certain rebate site that starts with mr and ends with rebates.com and get 6% back.

Any pesto-loving slickdealers find any cheaper source for bulk pine nuts? Let us know!

If we can't get pine nuts, we can always find a replacement.

The real problem is a fungus that is attacking the basil. Now that is a REAL concern!

Walnuts make a very delicious and much cheaper sub for pine nuts in pesto. I make it all the time because I am cheap, and you can barely tell the difference.

I don't know about the crisis ... but I can get them in bulk from my discount grocery store for about $15 per pound as of last weekend.

I agree, pesto with pine nuts is great but not worth the price right now. Also, google "Pine Mouth" and you'll see it's probably not worth the risk either.

I have been watching mine at Sams Club. They actually dropped form $22 to $15 for a 22 oz package over the last few weeks.
