Can anydvd latest version overcome this "rip-lock"?
no, rip-lock is embedded in the firmware of the drive. i cant remember the name of the chipset, but no one has written a patch for the firmware. And a doubt anyone will when you can get an equally or better drive from Lite-On or ASUS (Lite-On rebranded). I have contact with one of the Chinese engineers at Lite-On and she assured me they dont implement any rip locking features, and it shows in their products with 8-10x rips. What happens is Samsung rip-lock recognizes all the different copy-protections and slows the drive read down gradually. It might..MIGHT...start at 3x at the most...but will slow it down to 1x-0.3x... so much so that the ripping software will spit out a Read Error message. Now, some of the old old DVDs might rip at 3x fine, for some reason it doesnt care about the old Macrovision CSS...but newer protections like, CPRM, CPPM, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs, ARccOS, RipGuard, FluxDVD, CORE X2 gets locked down.

In the Product Info, how do I know if it has rip-lock or not?
Thanks again.

very reliable not to rip DVDs, since it incorporates Rip-Lock. I couldn't appreciate that.
Thanks, was going to recommend to a friend but won't now that I know.

well, your welcome...but dont get me wrong in thinking i'm saying this drive is terrible. If the owner is not, and doesnt foresee, ripping copy-protected DVDs...this will suit them fine...as its a good combo. I say this because brisar is a wise woman and she wouldnt have posted this deal if it wasnt quality products. All I'm saying is this drive isnt for everyone, and myself, cisengineer, and no doubt many others found out the hard way when we tried to rip our DVD collection to harddrive.

hope that helps... zai jian! wave

haha... i wouldnt imagine Samsung highly advertising or marketing this feature. It's just "known" by analyzing the firmware. Why Samsung switched from Realtek chipsets and added rip-lock is anyone's guess...but maybe the Samsung got into the MPAA pocket. These drive are awfully cheap all the time. hmmm.
I said enough... i dont want 2 guys in black suits and sunglasses with "Samsung" name tags knocking on my door. OMG

This is one of the fastest 7200RPM drives ever made.
...and one of the slowest. But it is a neck and neck race afterall amongst the 7200RPM drives!

Good point. I was unaware that this model had that. Can it be overcome with a custom firmware from someplace like CD freaks? I haven't ripped DVDs since I got setup with a Blu-ray player and HDTV.
