Returning stuff to WalMart without a receipt.

rjanak 27 October 13, 2006 at 07:53 AM
Hey, I was hoping some of you could answer a few questions for me as I've never done this before, and I figure some of you are probably pretty experienced Wink

Do they return the tax price? Like if you returned something that's shelf price is $5, do they just give you $5 back or do they give you $5+your state tax?

Can they tell when scanning it that it was or wasn't purchased from a WalMart store? About 4 years ago I tried to return a Windows XP Pro without a receipt and they told me that it wasn't purchased at a WalMart store so they couldn't take it.

I'm going to be returning a Xbox 360 Premium, if that matters.

Thanks for any help, will be much appreciated.

I thought that without a receipt, they will only exchange for the same item. Also, I know electronics are a special case in their return policy, and may require a receipt and that it not be opened. I think I also heard something about returning a limited number (1 or 2) of items without a receipt per year.

Good luck! woot

They can tell if that unit was purchased there by scanning it.

They have to refund the sales tax as well.

I hate WalMart. I wouldn't even enter their store. I would throw something through their window, that would be my way of returning it.

you can return items with receipt and they will give you the tax you paid.

you can return items without receipt however they CANNOT (by law) give you sales tax back.

Also if you return w/o receipt they now enter your LICENSE info in the computer to make sure you don't make a habit of returns w/o receipt.

They also might limit returns w/o receipt on big ticket items... how much does the xbox go for? like $300 - $400?

they can only tell if it wasn't purchased at walmart if the upc's are unique to various stores. Do the following to check: go HERE [upcdatabase.com] and enter the upc from the box into the query. It will give you a replica UPC you can printout. Take the printout to walmart and scan it with one of those price checker things they have throughout the store. If it says "see an associate", that means they dont sell the item. If it gives you a price then you can return the item.

I could have sworn I've gotten tax back on returns w/o receipts. You should get it back, since you returned the item.

Also - Walmart (at least around here) is changing their return policy. No receipt, no return. Good luck with that "return."

if this was the case, you could purchase something in an area without sales tax and then return it in an area with high sales tax - you could make up to 10% this way.

In-store return policy

http://www.walmartstores.com/Glob...o?catg=232

Return Policy
Everything in the store can be exchanged or refunded with a receipt within 90 days of purchase... with the exception of a few electronic items and regulated items.

After 90 days with receipt:
If available, we offer repair service through the manufacturer.

Exceptions to 90 Day Return Policy:

45 days with receipt: Computer components and computer accessories.
30 days with receipt: Camcorders and digital cameras.
15 days with receipt: Computers and postpaid cell phones.
These items must be unopened: Prerecorded music, movies, and software products.
Guns & Ammunition: Sales are final.
Tobacco & Alcohol: May only be returned to the store of purchase with original receipt (except where prohibited by law).
WIC Purchases: No refund for WIC-acquired items. WIC-acquired items that are defective or out-of-date may only be exchanged for identical product. WIC-qualified items must be returned with the original receipt.
SATISFACTION GUARANTEED
Our goal is to satisfy our Customers... by Exchange, Refund, or Repair.

Oh yeah forgot to mention that returns without receipt will give you a walmart gift card if it's over some threshold (like $20)

Did you buy it somewhere else cheaper and have the receipt but you are trying to return it to Walmart to make a profit? If so, that's just wrong.

If you return w/out a receipt they will usually say you have to go get something from that same dept. especialy for a big ticket item like that.

My wal-mart will not accept returns over $50 w/out manager approval-who at that point can accept or deny the return at any time/for any reason.

I returned a camera once, but it was a HUGE hassle, and that was only like $150.00. I hate returning things anywhere!

I have returned stuff to walmart without receipt maybe 5 times in my life. 3 of them I was certain they came from walmart (e.g. I bought them), one I was pretty certain it was purchased there (mother bought it) and one I knew it wasn't purchased there. I don't see it any different than a sale. I buy stuff from them, and when I return something, I am just selling it back to them.

A lot of stores will only give store credit if there is no reciept, also some will even check and see if it has been on sale in the last so many weeks and if it has thats the price you will get back no matter how much you paid (or didn't)

Since Wal-Marts seem to handle things differntly store to store, you could always call your Wal-Mart and ask what their policy is on returning a big ticket electronics item.

Yep, places like Lowes and HD now knock off 10-20% of the price if you return without reciept. (In other words, your store credit is 10-20% less than you paid) Try it, and then look at the shelf price. You will get less. Even if that item has had the same price for the past 90 days. I don't have a problem with it, I'm happy to get the store credit as opposed to being stuck with something I don't need.. but the moral is that if it's a big purchase, keep the recept.
