In Canada, "The Police State keeps us safe"
The Police State keeps us safe [vivelecanada.ca]
NORTH VANCOUVER - A North Vancouver couple has complained to District of North Vancouver council and said they will sue the North Vancouver RCMP after officers responded to their hang-up 911 call by breaking down their door, making a forceful arrest and jailing them overnight when the couple refused to allow a house-search. The RCMP said, however, that in this case, federal policy commands a home-check, designed to ensure public safety. North Vancouver resident Marget Lieder said that in the early evening of Oct. 25 she was having wine with her partner and a guest when she misdialed the emergency number, meaning to call 411 instead. After promptly hanging up, the police contacted her, saying two officers were dispatched and warned her her home would be searched to confirm she wasn't in danger. "I was sitting on the couch. They stuck a Taser in my face, threatening me with 50,000 volts," said Pierce, a well-known lawyer. "They threw me on the floor, twisted my left arm. A police officer stuck his knee into my ribs and jumped on me." Later he found out that his two ribs were cracked, recalled Pierce. The couple said the officers began taping them right away even though their rights weren't read until they were in the car. Once in jail, Pierce remembered he was interrogated for over an hour. It can't happen here. The gummint only goes after guilty people.
This couple should accept personal responsibility for their actions. It's entirely their own fault for dialing 911 instead of focusing on the phone and correctly dialing 411 or using a telephone directory in the first place. Last edited by Anonymouse; 01-02-2007 at 08:36 PM.. |

I live in that area (or very close to it, North Van is the "rich" neighbourhood). The laws are there to protect people.
Case scenario: Someone breaks into your house, you manage to dial 911, but the baddy grabs the phone and hangs up. The police call back, the baddy answers the phone and says everything is fine, I accidently hit 911. Would people rather the police just accepted that answer or investigate? The house search is also necessary. If the police came to the house and the baddy took one of the children to another room with him and told the adults to tell the police that everything was fine, do you think they'd tell the police anything different? No, they'd protect their child. This happens for EVERY mistakenly dialled 911 call, not just theirs. If you don't want to go through it, then think before you dial and make sure you dial correctly. DO NOT blame the police for doing their job to ensure people's safety. I do not think that any person in a situation as described above would want the police to NOT investigate the call because some lawyer in North Van made a stink about police procedure after HE/SHE made the mistake in the first place. PS....another reason not to drunk dial? lol |

That is rough, and I can relate to it. Our old wall phone still has 911 programmed to the bottom left quickbutton, and I've mistakenly dialed it several times just trying to pick up or hang up the phone! The police have shown up two times in my neighborhood about it, very pissed both times. I told them I don't know how to fix it, and they recommended we do something about it so that we don't pay some $1,000 fine or go to jail... Good times.
