Pet owners: How to get rid of dog/cat odor from couch?
![]() Someone was moving out in my building and I got a nice ..very comfy couch. I paid a good amount of money and its very comfy. But coming from a pet home, it smells of dog & cat..mostly..dog. the smell is overwhelming...and i cannot live it. Its masking my fresh paint smell of my new home. So..I just removed the cushion covers and put them in the washer. And I'm vaccuming the rest of the couch. Any ideas on how I can remove the odor? No urine spots or smells..Just the smell of a dog. Thanks a bunch! |

If febreeze doesn't work, rent a carpet cleaner with upholstry attachment. And put the inside cushions outside to air out in the sunshine (without the covers, so they don't fade)

Yes. Clean the whole sofa intact. Then put the cushions out to soak up the sun. Pet odors get trapped in the cushions. Washing them in the washing machine can sometimes "malformed" them, so the best way is just to air them.

I had carpeting in a past rental that reeked of dog. It was recommended that I use something called an "odor digester" like this. [amazon.com] The stuff i used worked pretty good and left a neutral scent but it didn't completely get rid of the odor. Over time I think my scent just took over

![]() I sprayed room freshener and now the combined smell is even worse. I'm so mad the cushion covers unzip..and I just washed one of them..to see if it survives...looks like it did..I'm going to throw the cushions in the sun now. Thanks everybody! $400!! Oh I am sorry
I think the sun will help. If you can turn off the brush on your vacuum, go ahead and vacuum the cushions minus the covers. Sometimes getting them wet will make the smell worse. I think the sun is a great idea!! Sprinkle baking soda in it, wait 20 minutes, vacuum again. I think you will get the smell out.

My vet recommended 'The Equalizer' it's a carpet stain and odor eliminator. It will completely kill the odors and they won't come back. But if the smell is soaked deeply into the padding, this might not work. You'll need to do a spot test to make sure it won't discolor the fabric of the couch. But if you can use it, the odor will not return, it's really good. It doesn't mask the smell with fragrance, it completely kills the smell. But it's not cheap, my vet charges $16.53 for a 20 oz spray can. Might be able to find it elsewhere cheaper.
You could also try the old smelly fridge trick. Wrap the entire couch in plastic and put a bowl (or several since it's a big couch) of charcoal briquettes inside the plastic with the couch. The charcoal will absorb the smell and does a great job of it. It some times takes two or three rounds of fresh briquettes before the smell is completely gone. This worked like a charm for a freezer that had rotting meat in it for over a week after a lightning strike tripped the breaker while my mom was out of town. You could try it out on one of the cushions to see if it works, before you wrap the whole couch. |
