It's not PC to assert that ANY BEHAVIOR is genetically based.
If it were, then that might be justification for discrimination. Everyone knows that the real reason some people are selfish or inconsiderate is because the Federal Government did not get to provide them with day care and that all behavior can be controlled with proper schooling. It takes a Village. |

Teaching our children what is expected in terms of morality and ethics is often a very difficult job ... and one that we often fail at. Our Moralities and ethics are by no means built into us... they are taught to us primarily so society will function with as little friction as possible. The social contract implies that if we follow the rules of our moralities and ethics, we can expect some of the benefits of our moralities and ethics... the social contract also says that if we break the social contract and violate our moralities and ethics, society will punish us for it. The origins of our moralities and ethics probably originated in simple and mundane relations between creditor and debtor ... obligations, services, payments, debts, duties. To think these things are somehow hardwired into us is a great naivetee. The fact that different societies have so many different moralities only strengthens my point. What is good in one is often crime and taboo in another. One of the most common and stupidest concepts among many western humanists is that people are born essentially "good"-- what they really mean to say is that they are born with our societies morality, expectations, and ethics built in.-- This is no small misunderstanding but the idea is enticing for them and probably gives them comfort especially in a society that is becoming increasingly fragmented, divided, and violent despite the best efforts of the western humanists. ![]() I feel it's the cause and effect of our actions that make us moral. As a society we judge each other on what we do which helps to dictate the moral codes we live by. |

There is ample precedent for social "morality" springing from instinct in the animal kingdom. Crows & Baboons provide some very good lessons on it.
We like to think of ourselves as above the animal and shrink from ideas that make us more like our fellow travelers on this orb. The famous Scopes Trial was one such moment in our history and the current debate over Intelligent Design/Creationism is another. People just don't like the idea we are growed up monkeys. How could HE create man "in his own image" and then allow man to evolve into what we are today? Why, THAT would mean HE looks like a monkey!!!!!!! Who, but General Ursus [hillcity-comics.com], would worship a monkey?

How does that remotely address the scientific investigation of a god or gods? |

interesting theory. but, not all behaviors are genetically based (despite what some geneticists will try to tell you). Look at it this way: baseball players know that baserunners go with the pitch when the count's full and there are two outs. They do it consistently time and time again. I guarantee you that there's no gene controlling that behavior.
