What kinds of data will Microsoft collect?
When you participate in the Windows Feedback Program, three types of data collected from your computer:

1. Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP)
The Windows CEIP is a way for Microsoft to learn how customers are using Windows Vista. If a user participates, a list of statistics is generated from the user’s computer at scheduled intervals; that list is later submitted to Microsoft over the Internet when the user’s computer is not busy. More information about this program can be found here. Please also review the CEIP disclosure within the Windows Vista privacy statement.

2. Office Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP)
The Office CEIP is a way for Microsoft to learn how customers are using Microsoft Office 2003 or Microsoft Office 2007 products. If a user participates, a list of statistics is generated from the user’s computer at scheduled intervals; that list is later submitted to Microsoft over the Internet when the user’s computer is not busy. More information about this program and the privacy statement for Office 2007 can be found here. To display the privacy statement for Office 2003, please search for “Privacy Statement” in Office 2003 online help.

3. Additional data collection
The following list describes some examples of additional data collection our software performs:

* Windows settings and usage, such as the number of user accounts on the computer and the view settings for Control Panel (that is, if you use the default Category view or the Classic view to display Control Panel).
* Details about your computer hardware, such as processor type and speed (as well as the number of processors), system memory, video memory, and other hardware configuration information.
* File and folder information, such as the number of files and folders located in common places (for example, in Documents).
* Which programs you open (for example, which application you use to read your e-mail).
* Changes you make to your hardware or software.
* Problems you encounter, such as application crashes.

This type of data collection can provide Microsoft with useful data, such as:

* Identification of top user problems; for example, how often does a computer crash or stop? How often do customers update Windows? How often are problems reported?
* How customers use their computers; for example, how often do customers use their computers? How often do they connect to the Internet? How long do they stay connected?
* How users store files on computers; for example, how much storage space do customers have on their computers? How much storage space is used? Where do customers store their files?

We do not intentionally collect sensitive information, such as the passwords on the user accounts, the contents of any of your personal files, the name or HTTP address of any of the websites you mark as Favorites, or what websites you visit.

What am I agreeing to do?
To participate, you will need to agree to allow Microsoft to gather and record information about the use of your home computer on an ongoing basis. By agreeing to voluntarily participate in the Windows Feedback Program, you agree that:

* You will abide by all terms stated and referred to in the Terms of Use and Notices (“Agreement”), including granting Microsoft a license to use your data and feedback.
* You will install software provided to you by Microsoft to facilitate and allow data to be recorded, transmitted, and used by Microsoft.
* You will be invited to participate in occasional online surveys.

Thank you for contacting the Windows Feedback Program. This is an automated message just to let you know that we have received your email. Below are some answers to common questions.

Didn’t receive email confirmation during enrollment

If you have not received the email confirmation during enrollment, and you are not able to continue with the registration process, please check your junk mail folder. You may also want to add these two email address to your contacts list:

winpanel@microsoft.com

winsurv@microsoft.com

Then try registering again, starting at the beginning: http://wfp.microsoft.com

Didn’t receive email to confirm registration

Please note that we don’t send another email at the very end to confirm registration. The setup wizard of the automated tool shows a page at the very end that confirms successful registration. You can also check whether it is installed properly:

Windows Vista Instructions:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and features.

2. See Windows Feedback Panel in the list.

Windows XP Instructions:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change or Remove Programs.

2. See Windows Feedback Panel in the list.

If we have not received any data from you, we will notify you.

Message prompting to contact winpanel@microsoft.com during installation of the automated feedback software

After completing the survey and installing the software, you may receive a message that prompts you to enter your email address again. You may also receive a message that the email address didn't match the one on file with Microsoft. After entering it again, you receive a notification to contact winpanel@microsoft.com. If you are sure you are using the correct email address, you may want to check your firewall application. Please make sure it is set to allow wfpuserreg.exe and wfpservice.exe access to the internet on outgoing TCP ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS). Both of these applications are located in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Feedback Panel".

How long does it take to receive the free product?

If you are a Windows Vista or Windows XP user and decided to join and participate in both programs, we will send you a free Microsoft product when you participate in the program. Limit one gift per person. This offer is non-transferable, while supplies last, and is not redeemable for cash. Taxes, if any, are your sole responsibility. Note that you will receive your product only after we have confirmed that you have:

• Entered a valid e-mail and shipping address.

• Fully completed the survey.

• Downloaded and installed the software on Windows Vista or Windows XP.

• Used our software for at least 3 months on a Windows Vista or XP computer that is periodically connected to the internet.

We will verify that you’ve used the Windows Feedback Program software for three months, and then we’ll send your gift to you. If we detect that your computer does not send data, we will notify you.

Requests to be removed

If you are already on the Windows Feedback Program and would like to be removed from the program, we will do so promptly. Please note that you may still receive another invite in the meantime.

If you just received an invite to join this program and you would prefer to no longer receive promotional offers or research e-mails from Microsoft, please visit the Microsoft Profile Center.

Requests to change email addresses

If you are already a member of the Windows Feedback Program and you sent us your new email address, we will update our system.

SOME MORE FEEDBACK RIPPED FROM ANOTHER SITE

Thank you for your inquiry about the Windows Feedback Program. Because of the high level of interest in the Program, we have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions below. Additional FAQs can be viewed here.

If you still have questions, please don’t hesitate to email winpanel@microsoft.com and we will make every effort to get back to you.

Thank You,

The Windows Experience Team

Frequently Asked Questions:

What happened to the free product offer?

The offer for complimentary Microsoft products was removed from the program when the supply of gifts ran out on December 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. PT.

How do I know whether I made the deadline to qualify for the free product offer?

If you entered your shipping address on our Web site and selected a free product from the list, you have successfully entered the program. (Please also see How long will it take to receive my free product?)

I know it says that participation is currently limited to the U.S, but are there any plans to roll out WFP in other countries?

The purpose of the Windows Feedback Program (WFP) is to provide a stable panel of customers who are willing to engage in feedback activities with Microsoft. We are exploring options for expanding the program to include international participants.

When did this program kick off? I can find references to it back in early November, for instance. Was that its official debut?

Actually, the WFP is an ongoing feedback program that has been active for more than five years.

I can understand why a premium was given, but why is the program still active when there is no compensation to the user?

We still have customers sign up regularly, and they receive other incentives to participate. For example, when they are invited to take a survey, there is often a gift option or a sweepstakes associated with the invitation.

I started the free offer enrollment process before 2 p.m. PT but didn’t get to finish until the offer closed. Do I still receive a free software product?

All customers who entered their name and email address on the first enrollment page before the program closed at 2 p.m. PT on December 11, 2007 are eligible to receive the free offer. We review the timestamps in our system to select eligible customers, and these participants will be sent an email in January to get them up and running with the automated feedback tool, request that they pick their free product and provide us with a shipping address. If you believe you are eligible for the free gift, but have not received an email from us by January 31, 2008, please contact winpanel@microsoft.com.
I signed up to participate in the Program, but have not received any follow-up information. Am I participating?

If you have not heard anything from us recently, it may just mean we have not sent out a survey. If you are an automated feedback program participant, you will be notified in the event that we do not receive any data from your PC.

Once I’ve been confirmed as a participant eligible for the free product, how long will it take for me to receive my free software?

You will receive your free product after we have confirmed that you:

A) Entered a valid email and shipping address;

B) Fully completed the survey;

C) Downloaded and installed the test software on Windows Vista or Windows XP; and

D) Used the designated software for at least 3 months on a Windows Vista or Windows XP computer that is periodically connected to the internet.

Once we have confirmed your eligibility, your gift will be sent to you. If we detect that your computer does not send data, you will be notified via email.

What if I didn’t receive an email confirming my enrollment in the free product offer?

If you did not receive an email confirming your enrollment, and you are not able to continue with the registration process, please check your junk mail folder. In addition, you may also want to add these email addresses to your ‘safe’ contacts list:

winpanel@microsoft.com

winsurv@microsoft.com

If you follow the above steps and still do not receive a confirmation email, try registering again from the beginning: wfp.microsoft.com.

All customers who entered their name and email address on the first enrollment page before we closed the free product offer program at 2 p.m. PT on December 11, 2007 are eligible to receive their free product.

What if I didn’t receive an email to confirm my registration?

We do not send a separate email at the end of the registration process. The setup wizard of the automated feedback tool ends with a page that confirms your registration. You can also check whether it is installed properly on your PC by following these steps:

Windows Vista Instructions:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and features.
See Microsoft Windows Feedback Panel 3.3 in the list.

Windows XP Instructions:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change or Remove Programs.
See Microsoft Windows Feedback Panel 3.3 in the list.

If we are not receiving data from your PC, you will be notified via email.

I received a message prompting me to contact winpanel@microsoft.com during installation of the automated feedback software. What does this mean?

After completing the survey and installing the software, you may receive a message that prompts you to enter your email address again. You may also receive a message that the email address didn't match the one on file with Microsoft. After entering it again, you will receive a notification to contact winpanel@microsoft.com. If you are sure you are using the correct email address, you may want to check your firewall application. Please make sure it is set to allow wfpuserreg.exe and wfpservice.exe access to the internet on outgoing TCP ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS). Both of these applications are located in "Crogram FilesMicrosoft Windows Feedback Panel". If that does not resolve the issue, please email us again at winpanel@microsoft.com with the subject line “email not recognized”.

How can I be removed from the program?

If you are already participating in the Windows Feedback Program and would like to be removed, please contact us at winpanel@microsoft.com and include “remove” in the subject line. Please note that after requesting to be removed, you may still receive another invite before the removal process has been completed.

If you recently received an invite to join the program and you would prefer to no longer receive promotional offers or research emails from Microsoft, please visit the Microsoft Profile Center.

How can I uninstall the software?

Windows Vista Instructions:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and features.
Remove Microsoft Windows Feedback Panel 3.3.

Windows XP Instructions:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change or Remove Programs.
Remove Microsoft Windows Feedback Panel 3.3.

What if I’ve changed my e-mail address?

If you are already a member of the Windows Feedback Program, please submit your new email address to winpanel@microsoft.com and your contact information will be updated.

Choice and Control

The Microsoft Windows Feedback Panel software occasionally checks online to ensure that you are running the most current version of the software and automatically installs an upgrade if a newer version is available.

We also wanted to let you know that you will be entered for a chance to win USD $5,000 cash each time you complete a survey from the survey feedback program between April 1, 2008 and June 30, 2008. I didn't refer to the free gift; I just asked if you choose both, or just one of them. I assume you chose the survey one in order to participate in the program. The automatic one is really something! Geez - sounds like they want to see how Vista is performing.

You will probably find out that the gift IS software.
What I find interesting is this paragraph in the FAQ:

We do not intentionally collect sensitive information, such as the passwords on the user accounts, the contents of any of your personal files, the name or HTTP address of any of the websites you mark as Favorites, or what websites you visit.

The word "intentionally" should bother you a little.EEK!

They go to great lengths to not tell you what the free program. So much so that I think it'll be
a ten year old version of Works or some other such crud.

The free gifts include programs like Vista Ultimate, Ultimate Office 2007, and other expensive software. It has a drop down list when confirm your e-mail link and type in the address where to ship your gift. I installed it. $200+ software for running some program? Works for me and I don't particularly care if Bill knows I've been visiting SlickDeals Wink
