Can anyone please tell me why I should buy the Dell Inspiron 1521 vs HP DV6646????

Hi, I'm new to this here forum so please tell me I should post this elsewhere. I bought the HP from Circuit City for $699 after rebate, but I have yet to pick it up from the store. I am having second thoughts and would love for someone to tell me why they prefer the Dell over the HP. This is kinda driving me crazy so I really appreciate any advice from you more experienced folk. The specs are essentially the same (the HP has a better graphics card and lightscribe (my bf's a musician so maybe that will come in handy?) and the Dell has bluetooth, and is not much more in price (with dell coupon and gift card).

Other laptop recommendations for grad student under $800?

Hi there,

If there is a place on this forum that directly compares HP's to Dells, can someone provide a link??

I'm still having a terrible time making this decision and I'd love to hear from someone. I'm open to other laptops in the under $800 range... .

This will be my first laptop (!!) and I'm a grad student with no income (and gigantic debt), so it needs to last a while! I'm also getting a flat screen monitor as this is a desktop replacement. I've had a Dell Dimension 1530 for the last several years and its been ok. The heatsink retention module broke off after less than 2 years, and a friend fixed it with superglue, which has lasted for 2 more years! But I think I'm pushing my luck and the memory is only upgradeable to 1GB anyway.

As I said, I bought the HP for $699.99 from Circuit City, but I still didn't pick it up yet. I have to do that TODAY, or get my money back and start over. I went to look at the Dells and the 1521 was a lot bigger than I realized. Has anyone tried using their 1521 on a plane, for instance? I was tempted by the 1420 but its more expensive! I also really don't think I want the 14-inch screen, it just seemed more manageable and portable.

I am concerned about the flimsiness of the HP, particularly the fact that you can push on the outside cover and it produces a ripple on the screen! I've also read the horror stories about their customer service (though not sure Dell's is any better from my own experience). I can't afford the extra warranty, but I'll get 2 years manufacturer's warranty with my credit card.

So I'd love to hear some opinions when you guys have a chance...
