We've had cats in the past but looking to get a pair of kittens to add to our family. I've started going through http://www.petfinder.com/ and http://www.craiglist.org/ but taking a break from those exhaustive searches because I need to narrow down what we're looking for. Strong preference for pair of sisters, don't want to get into a pissing match with a male cat. I thought this would be the optimum time to find/pick out kittens as our kids would have the 4 day weekend to spend with them. Should I look for a particular breed? These will most likely be indoor cats and would like to keep down on the allergens/dander.

Any other advice?

Call around to the vets in the area. My husband generally has a litter that's been dumped at the doorstep at any given time. They get fixed and trained before they're out the door for free. You have to pass the receptionist's personality test, though. If she doesn't like you, you're not getting a cat. Pairs are good!

I would get a DSH tabby cat... sisters are a good idea.

Tabbies seem to get along well with most everyone. If you get a white cat, it may or may not have more of an attitude. Siamese and Persians, I've heard, have a bit of an attitude as well.

As for allergens or dander, I think you're out of luck unless you get a hairless cat. Even my tabby causes a reaction to our allergic visitors, and her fur is as short as it's going to get.

It's great you are getting 2 sibilings! I have a brother and sister. They are very sweet together! Getting females will cut down on the allergens. Unfixed males have the most... You could try checking a shelter, ours usually has lots of cats. Good luck! Post pics.

i never thought of that route before. so vets don't refuse animals left at the doorsteps?? sounds like the animal ark series books. i read them

Kinda hard to refuse when they're tied to the doorknob. Or left in a box at the door. We're thinking of ripping out the bushes by the door - they seem to breed cats.

Actually, a male/female pair can often be better than two females as female cats tend to have more problems with other females than they do with males. Our cats are siblings, male/female and they get along most of the time. Every now and then, they'll get into a knock down drag out fight but then what siblings don't do that. My dad's three cats, who were all female siblings from the same litter fought constantly.
