Thread Details

Attention: If you have a $20 or less return with no receipt (that either you got as a gift, or paid cash for), run to Target before they close tonight.

I returned a product today with no receipt (that I paid cash for). I got a GC, and the cashier told me:

Starting tomorrow (1/1/08), Target will no longer accept any returns without a receipt!!!

If you paid with Credit/Debit card, you're ok. But, if you received it as a gift, or paid with cash, Target will not accept your return without a receipt. Run, Run, RUN!!!

UPDATE: I didn't mean to confuse anybody about the $20 or less. Target normally doesn't accept products w/out a receipt for more than $20. Starting tomorrow, they won't accept products regardless of the price. (Thanks for the question, buyitforme)

Target Stores Return Policy

We will issue a full refund for most items returned within 90 days in new condition, with the original receipt, packaging and accessories. A form of personal identification may be required.
For exchanges, simply buy the right size/color with the same SKU, and return the wrong size using that receipt. This has to work fine. The SKU does not list the size or color. <- This is completely wrong! Target DPCIs for clothing do incorporate both size and color. Be warned.

They can also trace receipts via gift card numbers. So, if you purchased with a gift card you might want to hang on to the card or write down the number because you will need it in the event you lose the receipt. The cashiers are all to helpful when it comes to throwing the used gift card away for you and they don't tell you that your purchase can be traced through the gift card number.

A few years back, Target would accept returns on items that they DIDN'T EVEN CARRY in stock...

Good to see that they're getting a little smarter with their return policies.

It is New Years Eve. A lot of malls are closing at 7 PM tonight.

For the past 2-3 years they would only take 2 returns without a receipt per year per person, keeping track by your drivers license. So items over $20 you can still return for a GC? You would think it would be the other way around.

that's strange in itself... target's main competition is Wal-Mart. Target's profit has grown well in comparison to Wal-Mart except for this holiday season. According to reports (MSNBC etc. ) Wal-Mart had better same store sales growth than Target over the holiday season (first time in 5 years I believe). So I guess Target is trying to save their bottom line by not allowing returns?? seems hard to believe since people are obviously not finished returning their xmas items as of yet....

I follow the financials and stock market way to closely..

Yup. Wife went to return 1 item and exchange another for a different size (with receipts!) They wouldn't let her do either because she had already returned twice in the year. They wouldn't even let her change sizes on unopened underwear she bought for our son!!!

I work at TRU and am happy to know that we're not the only ones with this policy now. hug Everyone feels like pouring their heart out on how horrible our policy is after they can't find their receipt from something they bought "a week ago"....Or "oh it was a gift so why on earth would you need a receipt..." Gee...I dunno, maybe it's because people love to play against the rules by returning stuff that (A) Didn't come from here, (B) Cost them nothing Ex: The free game of a B2G1 deal or similar, (C) Some used to even try to do the "Pick up and item, walk back to the service desk, and ask to return it" gig. Lol, doesn't work any more pal.

I can search for the transaction with credit/debit card information or a telephone number, but if it still doesn't come up, might as well go return it to Wal-Mart pal. Let the Beast absorb the overhead and hand you their Gift Card. Sorry about the rant, but people LOVE to get angry during the holiday return season over a $5 toy. laugh out loud
