Walmart has Garmin nuvi 350 GPS for $280 + $6 shipping.

Zappos is selling it for $513. Buy it at Zappos and call in (1-800-927-7671) to ask for a 110% pricematch for $513 - 110% PriceMatch * ($513 - $280) = $257.

also, not sure if deal is still alive, but costco did have a garmin nuvi 650 (nice 4.3" screen) for about $300.

the nuvi 350 at walmart is a good price for that gps as well as posted above.

Do you have a Palm with bluetooth? If so, you can save some money by just buying a bluetooth gps receiver, and getting map software. If you don't have a palm, then go with what folks are suggesting.

my husband just got me a Mio at radio shack for 150. I consider myself electronically "challenged", and I found it very easy to use right out of the box. Maps are very accurate.

If you only use it once a month, it's probably not a good investment unless you can find one for really cheap ~$120 or so...even then it's like $10/each use if you use it for a year! If you use it more often, it's a much better deal.

As for generally speaking, you can't go wrong with the Garmin of any level. I personally have a Garmin nuvi 350 and my dad has a Garmin nuvi 660. Both are solid GPS units and have great POI's and fast lock-on's and directions (even recalculating is fast). I originially debated buying a Garmin because it's so much more than the other brands (Tom Tom, Navigon, Mio, etc), but I'm really glad I did after hearing about the problems of the other brands.

OP, do you have a laptop? If your use is trully rare, you might consider bringing your laptop in the car. A laptop with mapping software and a 30 dollar GPS receiver is all you need. It's clunky, but manageable if your need is rare. You can probably spend $100 or so on hardware from ram-mounts.com to mount the laptop safely.
