Additional information about Windows Vista drivers for those who do not know...
* The XBox HD DVD player has drivers built-in to Windows Vista, so you just plug it in with the included USB cable and the drivers install automatically. The only thing you need to provide is the software to play the movies. PowerDVD is a good mainstream player that works for this purpose.

I just want to add one thing to this wiki to elaborate on the many reasons that people are purchasing the HD-DVD players:

Yes, we are all aware that HD-DVD has "lost" to Blu-Ray. That is a well understood fact. However, just because it "lost" does NOT mean it is a dead format. As an example, here is my reason to purchase the HD-DVD player ->

- HD-DVD Player $50.00
- Minus the Xbox 360 Remote (- $20.00)
- Total: $30.00.

$30.00 for a HD-DVD player, that comes with 6 HD-DVDs (AR). If we were to think of the HD-DVD player as free, then we realize that we are getting 6 HD-DVDs for $5.00 a piece! That is roughly the cost of a simple movie rental at a B&M store. Even if I only watch the movies once in my life, I still won't be out any money whatsoever! I'll still have my Xbox 360 remote, and I'll have an HD-DVD player to boot!

The HD-DVD player even works great connected to a PC, a HTPC, a (ironically) PS3 running Linux. Many people have their reasons for purchasing the HD-DVD player - none of which have anything remotely to do with the HD war being lost. At $50.00, whether or not HD-DVD had won the war, it is a steal for 6 movies and a remote on top of that.

For those living under a rock, future HD-DVD support has dropped from almost all hardware and content producers. do not expect HD-DVD to play any content made in 2009, for instance. because the format is being dropped by hardware manufacturers, there will most likely be no HD-DVD burners or media sold in the future.

Since this external HD-DVD drive uses a USB interface, PCPer.com [pcper.com] and AVSForum [avsforum.com] tells you how to use it with a PC running Windows XP. Paired with HD-DVD compatible player software would provide high-definition movie watching through your PC. Or the drive can be opened and installed inside a computer [uneasysilence.com] with a Mini ATAPI to IDE adapter.
