Make a cheap pet bed (crib mattress or used memory foam topper) This is super easy, and orthopedic foam pet beds are expensive. If you have an old memory foam topper, because you upgraded from a 1 1/2" to 3" or something, just cut it into the right size for your pet, put 2 or 3 layers on top of each other, and get some polarfleece to make a cover (fleece is 50% off at joanns right now). It's literally 2 seams on the sides, make a big pillowcase and tuck the extra under the bed. If your dog likes to chew add velcro or a zipper to keep them from ripping up the foam. If you can sew, you can make a bed with sides, 2 layers of foam on the bottom and 1 on the sides. Perfect for cheap memory foam, since it might not be dense enough for a human but it'll be great for a 15lb cat. I bought a cheap full memory foam topper for $28 at target everyday price, should be able to make 4 cat beds with sides and they'll cost a little over $10 each with the half off fleece and some light weight denim from my mother's attic. (denim for the zip on fitted inner cover, fleece outer cover that's easy to wash) Obviously much cheaper if you have an extra memory foam topper around. For a large dog, nothing works better than a crib mattress. You can get them super cheap slightly used on Craigslist (because most people are funny about buying a used mattress for their new baby), put them in a vinyl or waterproof allergen type cover (the ones that zip and cover it completely), and put flannel crib sheets on it. VERY good for dogs that shed a lot because it's much easier to wash the crib sheets than most dog bed covers. A German shepherd breeder told me about this, If you have a dog with bad elbows or hips nothing can match it. |
