WinRAR 3.62 free license (unzip, unrar, etc)

PC World Magazine in Germany (PC Welt) is giving away a free, legal, license to WinRAR 3.62
(which normally costs $29)

The last free giveaway of WinRar was 3.5 (2 years ago)
so this will upgrade you a little (with multi-core support, etc)
German key works fine in english version.

Technically they are all the same key but I won't post the key directly, only their registration form to be safe. It needs your email to send the URL to download the key (I realized afterwards I could have used a temp email, oh well)

When you get the email, the download link is the SECOND url in the email.
Copy the rarreg.key it downloads into your c:\program files\winrar\ folder

I find WinRAR [win-rar.com] to unzip faster than 7zip, pkzip and the alternatives - very small and lightweight.

ps. While the most current version is 3.71, that's only needed for Vista users which should be a minority

Free Full Version WinRAR 3.62 (Windows)

PC Welt [pcwelt.de] (German PC World magazine) is giving away free licenses for WinRAR 3.62 (supports multi-core CPUs and Windows Vista). Thanks avalon

Start here [win-rar.com] to request the license key file, enter your information, and select Anderes Land (Other Country)
Once you receive a confirmation email, click on the second link and download the key file
Download version 3.62 [rarlab.com] of the application and install
Copy the key file you received in step 1 in the folder you installed the apllication in step 2
(most commonly, "C:\\Program Files\\WinRAR\\")

Note, registration site is under heavy traffic and may feel slow to respond. Please be patient.

If you go check out some of vulnerabilities , not all of them is fixed in WinRAR 3.62. Some of them is fixed in newer version like 3.70+

For everyone asking for a key so they don't have to do it themselves, just open a few windows and paste the link in. I got 4 of 10 to bring up the page. I then entered my info in all 4, then pressed submit on all 4. One of them made it through and I got the email. Use the 2nd link in the email. Once that link loads, click the link using "open a new window" and open a few windows. At least one of them will download.

For an open source alternative, try 7-Zip [7-zip.org]. It has ALMOST ALL of the same features and it's totally free!
IZArc
For a freeware alternative, try IZArc [izarc.org]. It has MANY MORE features and can decompress ANY FORMAT you will encounter.

And WinRAR is free for now but if you accidentally uninstall the program (or when you reinstall your windows, reformat your hard drive, hard drive died, etc) when the deal is dead, then you cannot install this again if you don't have backup. Make sure you BACKUP the files!!

The email will be in German, the key works in any language for the product.
When you get the email, select the SECOND link in the message for the key download.

If you are using Vista, you might need 3.71 which can't use this key (I tried).
There have been huge bug fixes since 3.4: http://www.rarlab.com/rarnew.htm

Thanks, good info. I've installed 3.42 on about a dozen machines, both XP and Vista. My new Vista machine (last month) is quad core, so it would be nice to get 3.71, I guess. In the meantime I'll stick with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" slogan.
