Seagate FreeAgent 750 GB External HD (USB 2.0 only) w/ 5 yr warranty - $119.99 shipped

I was looking around for a cheap external HDD with a good warranty and stumbled upon this one at frys website. Seagate has a good reputation and this drive has a 5-year warranty

I was bummed about missing out on the Lacie 750 GB external drive for $128, but ended up getting a better drive for cheaper!!

It's not a bad deal considering I bought the 500 GB version for 99.99 at the end of the last year. It ships for FREE from Frys online and there is no sales tax depending on where you live (its great for us East Coasters).

The HD is SOLD OUT! HOWEVER, Frys is selling the Maxtor One Touch 750 GB external HD for the same price, but you have to pay S/H which starts at $6.81. Maxtor is made by seagate, but some people think it may not be as good of a brand. It does carry the same 5-yr warranty as the seagates.

how long did it last? ive had good luck for about 6 mos now (knock on wood). Plus w/ the 5 yr warranty, did you get a new one?

It's really slow at data transfer, It slows down my fast computer and causes the display driver to stop running for a few seconds when I am transferring more than one large file. I won't put important data on it.

Some negative experiences and reviews seem to be a pretty common theme with external hard drives from most manufacturers. I read so many horror stories about both the Seagate�s and WD�s that I was sure if I bought one it would start on fire 2 seconds after I completed my back up, but after 6 months I haven�t had any trouble yet (I bought the WD by the way). I guess you just have to keep 2 copies of anything important which is a good idea anyway.

I have a 500Gb version which I have filled up completely. USB2 is simply too slow for steady access. What I use mine for is pretty much nothing more than connected to a media server with an archive of TV shows which isn't very demanding but it took an insane amount of time to actually transfer all of the files over.

ESATA or firewire is the only way to go for external storage at reasonable speeds.

I'd just watch for a good deal on an INTERNAL drive and simply put it in an enclosure for anybody looking right now. I picked up a universal adapter for Sata/PATA to usb port and I find that I prefer using that most of the time. It doesn't have an actual enclosure but I had a couple of hard drive cases floating around in my basement.

From what ive seen and heard elsewhere, you dont need eSATA or FW unless you are planning to boot off the drive with an OS. For playback of media files, USB 2 is absolutely fine.

The heat doesn't come from the the drive but rather from the electronics in the base of the enclosure (where you plug in the usb cable). And I don't mean that it seems a little too hot. I mean that it gets hot enough to leave a mark on a wooden table, possibly hot enough to start a fire if it came into contact with the wrong materials. It heats up like this even when the drive isn't spinning.

The units I had were slightly different from this one though as I had the model with a USB and eSata connection (I bought two of them and they both had the problem). After searching around the internet I found that others were experiencing the same problem.

I took both drives out of their enclosures and now use them as internal drives. They work great.
