Newegg [newegg.com] has Linksys WRT54GL wireless 802.11b/g router for $51 - $10 rebate [newegg.com] = $41 with free shipping. Thanks xenomega
This router supports third-party firmwares such as DD-WRT and Tomato for enhanced features. |

Thanks OP I may get this since it's only $1.00 more than CompUSA in-store this week. I wanted to pick up 7 but trying to get accounting to cut a check and send it to my Dallas office to go pick it up is too much work so $20 in MIR + $2 may be worth it. I need to find some routers with 8MB flash so I can use DD-WRT Mega since we need it for VPN and VOIP.
For those who are about to complain that it lacks DraftN or GigE, I say enjoy your router that keeps crapping out and needs constantly rebooted. I have a few WRT54G v2 and Buffalo with over 100 days uptime and no issues. My multiple D-Link DI-624 and Netgear WNR854T routers are a different story. Any DD-WRT users out there try to use the OpenVPN with a mesh VPN network 3+ sites? I'm tired of paying XO $240 a month per site for 14 sites to manage our mesh VPN with Cisco IOS 1721 routers. That's $40k+/year I wouldn't mind eliminating. The cool thing about DD-WRT is you can run a script to use the router to connect to our VPN network as a Cisco client so I can connect a few of my 3 person offices with out paying out the wazoo. Info HERE [dd-wrt.com] I have yet to try this so i'm hoping it will work. Last edited by Jughead; 07-02-2008 at 06:53 PM.. |

I've been thinking of submitting the rebate even though I bought mine on ebay with cashback because the rebate doesn't specify any retailers unless I missed it. I got the router for $40 so getting this rebate would make it extra slick. Anyone think it's worth a try to send in? It says a copy of an online receipt, so I can send in a copy of my paypal receipt.

No such luck with Ebay. Check the fine print. |

The latest versions of the WRT54G aren't Linux based and make DD-WRT incompatible. The "L Version" of these routers still run Linux and can be modified.

WRT54G v1-4 has 4MB Flash and v5-8.2 has 2MB which can only handle Micro builds Basically after they released the version 5 people started screaming so Linksys cashed in on the people using their hardware with Linux firmware and created the GL which is basically the old v1-4 WRT54G and sold it for a premium. Linksys Hardware Info [dd-wrt.com] DD-WRT Feature Comparison Chart [dd-wrt.com] WRT54G v7 is not supported because they used Atheros chipset instead of Broadcom and people have been having issues with v8 and up some bricking their router during the flash process. |

GL vs. GS (besides its SpeedBooster) vs. G ??
As I have a WRT54G and a couple WRT54GS that I got years ago w/ the intention of installing DD-WRT which I never got around to In fact, I'm still on Firmware Version: v2.04.4 dated Aug. 3, 2004 Better for me to brush-up on the OP's mentioned wiki's, tx
