BAD NEWS: Amazon will no longer accept "Pay by Check/Money Order" as of September 11, 2008!

From an inside source, I received the following information regarding Amazon's method that allows you to pay by check or money order.

This is especially bad news for those of us SD'ers who like to put hot Amazon deals on "lay-a-away" to lock in the price until we have the $ to pay.

Please, keep the tears to a minimum.

Hello from Amazon.com.

As you may have heard, beginning September 11, 2008, we will no
longer accept paper checks or money orders as a payment method on
Amazon.com. If you still have check funds on your account now, you
have a few different options:

• Place an order and select ‘Pay by check’ in the order pipeline.
• Wait until after September 11, at which point any remaining
check funds will be converted to gift card funds; the funds will
then be applied to your next order.
• Request a paper check for the balance of your check funds by
writing back to us at:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/co...tions.html

If you’ve already placed an order with the check funds on your
account, your order will be processed as usual.

For your reference, Amazon.com accepts the following alternative
payment methods:
• Payment directly from your bank account
• Debit cards
• Credit cards
• Amazon.com GiftCards
• Bill Me Later®

Me too! This always worked so well when you were not sure if you had the funding or if you wanted to price check before buying. damn you Amazon.

Oh yeah... Choose to pay by check, then later you could either send the check in or change your payment method to your CC info, and the item would ship when you did it. If you decided you didn't want it, it would just fall off your account in about a month. I'm sad now.

Back in the day, this is how I always paid!! It was one of the few places that still accepted this form of payment online. I must say, I haven't paid with a money order on amazon in ages though.

Well, this sucks. Since an Amazon price would often change in 5 min, I would "pay by check", in order to give me a day or two to think about it. Then I would either charge it or pay by credit card.

I guess too many deadbeats ordered stuff and never sent the check..

Well, if a check wasn't sent in Amazon would simply cancel their order. So I don't think this is exactly why Amazon decided to stop the "Pay by Check/Money Order" option.

I did not know about it either until....in response to one of my questions to their csr's, they suggested that I do this in order to lock in my price! Their customer service

Well, I think Amazon got rid of this option for the exact reasons that were mentioned--that is, ppl were using it as a way to hold items for them at a locked price. For the retail business' standpoint, it's a money-losing option because they could lose sales while that item is on hold for a customer who can change their mind and cancel the order.

Also, there's a higher chance of fraud when paying with check or money order.

Guess I'll repeat just like everyone else.....
