How to connect cable box / HDTV and DVD player?
I am planning on hanging a flat screen tv and routing all the cables through the wall and connect to DVD player and cable box (which will be set up at the other end of the room). I want to purchase all the cables in advance but have need to know what cables I exactly need. Thanks in advance for the help! BTW - these are the devices I´ve got so far: LG 42" HDTV with antenna, hdmi, s-video and audio/video connectors older model DVD/VCR combo player with antenna, s-video out and audio/video connectors Don´t know what kind of cable box I will get from Cox Cable Service. |

How many HDMI inputs does your new TV have? How many component inputs? Does your older DVD/VCR have Component out? (Red Green Blue) IF you are getting HD service you want to hook up your cable box with HDMI or component (though they usually have teh stuff to hook you up correctly) and hook your antenna to the cable box off air antenna coaxial port (if equipped) if you are going to be getting your HD FROM the antenna? Hook up your antenna right to the TV's coaxial antenna port. The older DVD player and VCR should be hooked up via componnet if it has it. If not? DEFINITELY go S-Video. Also if you Don't have component on it, you might want to look for another combo unit or seperates as you will not be able to send a progressive scan signal to your TV. HDTV's are awesome, but ALOT of them do NOT do crappy signals very well. Hope that helped, and if I can clarify any of my ramblings just let me know. WHENEVER possible run HDMI or Component. BEST PQ you will get. |

I do not have an A/V receiver. Just Tv, DVD player and cable box.
Believe it or not, but we are currently not getting HD service through cox (just enjoy the nice flat screen on the wall w/o using the HD feature ). The cable cox will be used mainly to what show is currently playing and what will be on next (don´t know the name of the feature). The Tv has one HDMI in and one HDMI/DVI in. I do not know how you count the component inputs, but it´s a LG model 42LC7D and here are the specs [lge.com]. The older DVD/VCR has component out only for the DVD portion - not for the VCR. In order to play VCR´s and DVD´s, I would have to go through Audio/Video Out (white/red/yellow) or connect VCR and DVD portion separately (VCR via Audio/Video Out and DVD via component out or S-Video ---- if that makes sense !?). |

Let me ask if this configuration is correct:
- Coxial cable to cable box - HDMI cable for connection from cable box to TV - Audio/Video connection from TV to VCR portion of the DVD/VCR combo AND - Component cable (3 prong) or S-Video cable from TV to DVD portion of the DVD/VCR combo. Is that sufficient or do I need any other connections ? Do I need to buy special cable since the cable lengths will be around 35 feet due to the routing ? |

I don;t have the manual in front of me, but you might need to split the audio from the DVD/VCR as the one audio connection might not feed both the Component and composite/S connection.
I would also run the extra HDMI cable now too. Save yourself the trouble when you buy something else that needs it. HDMI cables form monoprice are cheap, so much so that it makes sense to buy two in order to justify the shipping. You might want to make the A/V connection from the cable box to the VCR too in case you want to record something. Good Luck! W |
