I bought this set for a Christmas present last year ($80 at Best Buy). The person I gave this to ended up returning the thing cause most of the discs wouldn't play and she was a little pissed off at me because of it (even though I had no control over it).

I read that it was the way the discs were packed caused scratches and warping. My advice is wait until a better set comes out, or at least don't give this as a gift. If you plan on giving this as a Xmas gift you won't be able to return it if there are problems because it will be past the return period.

I agree 150%! I actually bought 5 of these (to resell) when Best Buy had them on sale for $80 each. I gave 1 set to my wife for Christmas because she loves the show. She's told me that 5 of the disks either won't play or skip all the way through, even though there are no scratches on the disks.

Of the 4 sets that I sold, 2 of them had disks that didn't play (it's possible the other 2 buyers also had problems but didn't contact me).

I would advise against buying this collection. It's a good price, but it's not worth it if there is even 1 disk that won't play, which is common for this set.

I just wanted to post my experience as an FYI. I bought these a few months ago from Amazon and had no problems. I'd read about the quality issues, but also had read that it was only with certain early batches and that the problems had been cleared up. I ordered mine, hoping for the fixed discs, and tested every single disc the first day (spot checked each disc with my DVD player). I had no issues and my GF has watched them all multiple times on my regular DVD player and my Xbox 360. I may have just been lucky, but I think the issue was a past thing.

Aparrently there are three different upc's for 2005, 2007 and 2008 according to one of the reviewers:

Basically stay away from the 2005 version because that seems to have defective packaging.

My friend has this box set and she purchased it some time ago(2006). All the discs worked fine, maybe there was just a bad lot of them. I bought The Matrix DVD from Target and it skipped despite the DVDs read surface being flawless so again, anything is possible. Isn't there some B.B.B. practice that doesn't allow a retailer to sell known-defective stock? shit-piss
