Thread Details

Found a Rebate form at CVS which says :

American Express Gift Cards : Buy Two Gift Cards and get a Free American Express Prepaid Card worth $15 via mail-in rebate for purchases 9/15/2008 and 11/02/2008.

So this is a $7 money maker even after paying the min $3.95 activation for each card.

Limit : 1 per household

Offer valid for purchases made at participating in-store only (no online purchase). Rebate must be postmarked by 11/24/2008. Original rebate form (found at point of sales) must be used.

I wonder how long it takes to get the mail in rebate
Also could be a YMMV as cvs may have different prices at each store?

cvs is not going to have different prices on this. It is a prepaid credit card with a set activation fee. they have in the past though had ecbs if you buy a couple amex cards so that would offset some of the activation fee.

i was waiting for another one of these deals to show up. too bad it's only for a $15 rebate. if cvs has ecbs associated with the cards, then i might go for it.

Might be a little more helpful OP if you post the rebate form so people can see terms and conditions.

There are folks on this board who will make special trips to CVS just to get an item that's a $1 moneymaker, so 7 dollars for basically doing nothing is not bad at all. Especially if CVS does an ECB deal on the cards as they've done in the past.

Amex had a free activation thing a while back not sure if its still running and if it was just for the cards bought through the Amex website.

Yes--they're still running that promo via Amex's website but I think it might be only good on their website. It would be great if Amex would waive activation fees on gift cards if you use your Amex card to buy them in other stores as well.

Please explain how this can be a mm. You are not allowed to use EBC on prepaid cards. Not to mention the lowest denomination that I carry is $25.00 plus the 3.95 activation fee. So I would assume that your pay out would be 57.90 and then play the sit and wait for a $15.00 gift card that can only be redeemed where they accept American Express.

You are right that you have to pay $57+ to get the two cards (after activation) but then $50 is like cash (where accepted). So your real OOP is $7+ and you get a $15 free card making it $8 money maker.

It all depends on your way of looking at things ... if that $25 + $25 cards sounds like a waste of money, then this deal is definitely not for you.

As far as I know you have to pay cash for any gift card that requires activation and has a VISA, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express logo. If you try to use a gift card it will not be put through. Also, all stores (CVS) have been told that to use a cc to purchase these item would be considered money laundering.

I bought quite a few amex cards at ralphs (kroger) during their last promo with my ralphs gift cards that i got with the 10% bonus (during the time period when rebate incentive checks were being sent out by the feds).

I have also bought ebay gift cards with my kroger gift cards. Not one time has any cashier or manager said I couldn't do it and they all went thru fine and it wasn't like I was trying to hide anything. I got the kroger gift card with my discover card and then told them i wanted to buy amex cards with the kroger gift cards and bought nothing else.

I have also bought amex cards at cvs with my discover card during their last amex promo when cvs had $5 ecbs if you bought two amex cards.

I then bought kmart gift cards with the amex cards, got the hulk movie tix and then used the kmart gift cards to buy the $100 dockers at sears and got back $75 in shell gift cards and $10 sears gift cards.

The last promo had a $25 gift card to four stores including best buy if you bought two amex cards. I turned those into $25 best buy cards online and there was no shipping.

I never spent the amex cards on anything but gift cards and i never spent cash to get the amex cards in the first place.

This deal though..... $15 gift card and no other deals to turn my amex cards into??? I will probably pass if there is no ecb deal. I have $225 in gas cards from shell now, so it would be quite a while for me to use the amex cards.
