As I recall, the 5800 was about $300 on Dell near pre-order (when I ordered) when other stores were carrying it for about $380. Couple months later, there was a massive $200 Dell deal (and around $225 deals after that). As much as I'd hate to, I think I'll pass and wait for price to drop <$400.

On the other hand, I think the N97's best price has been only $450 so far.

Dell is not cool with certain returns, not sure about cancellations. If you do choose to return, make sure you tell them the problems with the phone (and you better find some). Otherwise, you will be charged a 15% restocking fee.

Canceled my Amazon preorder and placed my order with Dell. I HATE Dell customer service and return policy, but saving $130 over amazon is kinda worth it.

I am not sure about Dell, but Amazon did not charge me for my pre-order. I would venture a guess that Dell doesn't charge either until they actually ship. I recently bought an ASUS motherboard from Dell small business, it wasn't pre-order, but they didn't have it in stock for like 2 or 3 weeks and they didn't charge me until they shipped it. So I think we are safe.

As of right now ovi.com is the only one. Just wait until the phone comes out and then you'll be able to find softwares, etc online

I like this phone because it works with t-mobile but can't justify spending $442 on a phone...

..Oh, and Iphone is a phone (granted, it's "smart" phone), where as Nokia N900 is Mobile Computer that runs LINUX version - Maemo. But at they actually have the same Cortex processor, not that it matters, because the processor alone by itself doesn't mean much.

The resistive screen isn't that big of a problem, read the reviews, search the youtube for the videos, everybody is saying it's very well done and very responsive. In the end though, it's just a matter of preference, some people just HAVE to have the capacitive one.

This isn't just a phone though. It's a mobile computer with phone functions. A nearly full desktop browsing experience with Flash 9.4.

HTC dragon and other google phone are easily well over $500 price tag, many don't had unlock version right away and usually only for carrier first. Any HTC phone has little or no internal memory. The photo and video record no way near as nokia n900.

I've been using/testing this phone for a few months now. I was a bit disappointed at first when I found out that it did not have MMS, but with all the other features, I can tell honestly I don't miss it:

• 32 GB memory, expandable up to 48GB.
• 1 GB of application RAM
• True multi-tasking...ability to easily keep apps running in background and switch to them
• Built-in VoIP capability.
• DVD quality video record and playback
• Fully customizable desktops....make that 4 of them. You can have apps, widgets, contacts, bookmarks, on your desktops or nothing. I have one for work, friends, family, bookmarks
• Basic unix utils for all you unix geeks (telnet, ssh, sshd, vpn, rdesktop, eyes, etc)
• IMAP, POP, Mail for Exchange, Google Talk, skype, sip, jabber and ovi

Plenty of apps via Maemo website. Best thing is that most are free right now. Testing SNES nintendo emulator now. :-)

Like 95% of N97s were Made in China. I don't why it matters where it's made. It's still made in a Nokia factory with Nokia design, specifications, and parts...the only difference is the ethnicity of the assembly line workers.

This reminded of this idiot from CL that called me wanting to buy my N97 and then accused me that it was fake because it was made in china. He apparently thought that if the N97 was a US version, that it HAD to be made in the US...effing noobs.

I think it work, some blog they test out with tmobile 3g and work, just non t-mobile 3g won't work. That is apply to most smartphone 3g anyway.

When andorid first out, they also lack of software that sames goes to iphone, but i can tell you this maemo will be getting large third party support since nokia is probably gonna dumb their symbia os and use maemo in most of their top nokia line up. I got it 299 like year and half ago refurb.

There are quite a few apps for Android, and I am sure there will be a lot for Maemo too, Nokia gathered a ton of developers a couple of weeks ago and gave away 300 units for free to the developers ( granted only for a period of time, I donno, few month), so that they could start "playing" with it and developing apps. Now, all of you Apple fan boys - when was the last time Apple gave away something for free?? Of course Maemo most likely never gonna grow to the size of Apple store, after all it's Mobile Linux, but for those of us who are not afraid to be different and like their inderpenance and the ability to poke around in their own phone/computer without having to ask Mr.Jobs' or Mr.Gates' permission this is exactly the mobile computer we all have been waiting for.

This phone doesn't require most of the minor useless apps that you require for iphone, etc, since it has full web-browser with also desktop shortcuts.

Currently the Maemo dev. community is working aggressively to port the existing apps from Symbian, etc and also developing new ones, especially since Nokia opened up the dev kit making easy for devs to develop/port apps.

I have been following this phone/OS since long time, and will be my next phone/OS.

I had iphone 2g, wanted to upgrade, i hade fact i can only run 1 appt at a time, and if i put more than 5 page of app it start getting slow navigation, also those jailbreak app is kinda turtle no more roms support and lack many previous cool app like camcorder etc..all no longer valid in the newer iphone update. I read youtube someone running the n900 in roms very smoothy.

the way i see it, nokia loaned out the n900s to developers because they HAD to do it. they're basically starting from scratch, and they're way behind apple/android.

at the time apple launched its app store, it already had the hottest cell phone on the planet, so they didn't have to bother.

i'm looking forward to getting the n900, but i know that realistically, nokia's app store will never even come close to apple or android's.

I have Nokia 5800 which is also S60v5.
There are plenty necessary apps available that make like easy.

Only things that are not available is high end games, which will start becoming available soon.

Go to ovi store and also dailymobile.se, mobifall.com, etc third party sites for apps.

I was a little late and wasn't able to get the code to work through Dell's small business site, but I called Dell's small business sales to place the order over the phone and they were able to enter the discount manually.

Nokia is not starting from scratch. Its just Maemo that is new, Symbian is there and is going through major UI haul.

Also, yes Nokia's app store may not boast of 100,000 apps, but for phones like N900, you don't need half of those 100,000 apps for reading news, chatting,social networking, etc.

Also apps for Nokia phones have been available since a long time on third-party websites. IF you total all the apps available on different sites/vendors, it will be a huge huge number.

Although, that HTC HD2 looks juicy! Really sucks though that it's a WinMo device... :vomit:

apart from games most of the apps in apple's app store is needed because of the short coming of iphone's browser..
for eg. why do u need an app for movie listings when u have a full fledged browser??

I agree. The N900 and HD2 were on my hotlist. Loved the HD2's screen and processor. Didn't like the lack of GPU though. Still, I really wanted as close to desktop browsing as possible and I really hope the N900 doesn't disappoint. I remember all the hype with the 5800 and N97. The N900 does look much better in the initial impression reviews so far though compared those previously mentioned.

The *only* reason you "need" and "have" an app store is because of Apple's iron fist.

Copying the app store from Apple is a bad move I think, though it does give consumers a place to focus and give the appearance of "competing" with Apple, it is unnecessary since Nokia doesn't have to approve all the apps first.

That means the potential for more apps actually exists for the Maemo platform overall and chances are, they are not going to be stupid apps that "somehow" gain traction or apps that are developed to overcome a shortcoming of the handset. :)

I know there are some apps available, I use them, but "soon" is what I keep hearing from everyone about high end games, Slingplayer or Hava. I had those on my old Nokia and I want them on my new phone.

I am not arguing that the N900 is a great phone, but every new phone that comes out is the next best thing. I am done buying "the next best thing" and am now going to get something that works NOW.

BTW, as mentioned before, the N900 will not work 3g on ATT and I am not switching.

There are 2 huge negatives...

1) It's fat. It's like getting into a committed relationship with a fun fat chick. When you see the hot neighbor chick watering her flowers in her bikini, you're gonna wish you didn't have that ball and chain.

2) Maemo is sorely lacking in the app department. Android just mops the floor and is growing much faster. Ask any techie, virtually no one is developing for Maemo first. The apps will be there soon....yeah right.

And the HTC Dragon has a 1 GHz processor and bigger screen and is freekin' skinny and hot. Just look up the HTC HD2 and imagine Android 2.0 on it. Hell, even the Droid is rocking hard - I just need the GSM version.

In case you haven't heard, the Iphone is officially the worst phone with the most problems ever made. It looks nice but looks aren't everything. I want a phone that works all the time not some times. If I am paying $599 for the phone, it better work. Even chrysler's K-car was more reliable.

HTC HD2 but with Android (currently called Dragon, but it isn't out yet.) Why? Bigger screen but same res, much thinner and runs Android.

Everyone should email Amazon's CS and let them know about Dell's pricing. This would push Amazon to match the Dell price.

Hi, I know Amazon does not pricematch, but most of the time Amazon stays very current with its prices to be very competitive or even lower than its competitors. I would like to let Amazon know that the Nokia N900 is currently priced at $559.99 on Amazon. While Dell.com has the same phone for only $519.99 with a 15% coupon off, so they're selling the phone for only around $450. I had an existing pre-order with Amazon but canceled it to order from Dell instead. It would be unreasonable to ask Amazon to match the coupon pricing of Dell, but if Amazon at least priced this phone more competitively, I would be more than willing to cancel my Dell order, and reorder from Amazon. I am a loyal Amazon customer, but I just can't ignore the huge savings by ordering from Dell instead. Thank you.

Even though I ordered the N900, I'm still looking forward to the HD2.

For me, the expected retooling of Windows Mobile to Windows Mobile 7 and the confirmed integration of the Zune service by Steve Ballmer is a deciding factor.

The built-in wireless router capability is another. Allows devices to connect to the HD2 via Wi-Fi to utilize its internet connection. Hopefully, with the rumored speculation that it's going to T-Mobile USA and the announcement of HSPA+, 21 Mb/s speed next year, that could make that feature a really big plus.

In addition to the other mentioned plusses in the various reviews as well.


Each phone has its benefits. It's up to you to compare and figure out what would most suit you.

I gain a lot of "hands-on" information from watching the many reviews of both phones on YouTube.

I think either won't disappoint, but at this stage in development on either device, FOR ME, the HD2 might suit me better, and will most likely pick one up should it be supported by T-Mobile USA.

wifi is no big deal.. i do it already with my nokia 5800.. using Joiku spot.. and its free..

therein lies the rub. the N900 is a Maemo 5 phone, not a Symbian like the 5800.

i don't think there is a program that does it on the N900 (at least as of August)

With Dell, if the device has problems or is faulty, you can get a full refund so long as it's within the first 30 days (or was it 21?). But if you just tell them you want a refund expecting that since you'll be receiving a refund anyway you won't need to tell them about any issues, you'll get hit with the 15%. It's stupid but I found out the hard way. And once they tell you about the 15%, it goes on your account record so you'll have no luck calling back and trying to tell them about the issues to avoid getting hit with the 15%. They'll just direct you to the manufacturer's warranty.

ALWAYS TELL THEM ABOUT THE ISSUES WITH THE DEVICE!!!

Ugh... Garmin Mobile XT won't have support for this right away... if at all, since this isn't Symbian based. Does anyone know if the included OVI maps provides for turn-by-turn routing WITHOUT requiring an active data link for map transfers? I love Garmin XT because all the maps are stored on your memory cards.

I have a 5800, and out of Garmin, Ovi Maps, and Google Maps, I prefer using Google Maps since it fixed a GPS position the fastest and its also the quickest to use. I would imagine your choices when the phone is first released would be Google Maps and Ovi Maps.

Garmin is doing away with their MobileXT program. Version 5.0 is it.

That is extremely disheartening news. MobileXT is quite possibly the greatest phone app I have ever used. The ability to use it to convert a phone into a full-fledged offline GPS is amazing. It allows my N85 to perform about a swell as my Etrex Legend HCX

I'm guessing you buy them because you don't want to sign a 2 year contract with the mandatory data plan. If so, how do you use the phone to surf the net (beside wifi)? Do you just use it as a phone and a media player? Do you put in a simcard for prepaid plans and pay by the bytes? I'm a little lost.

Yes and No, some get this phone so they can trade their g1 or iphone by still use the data plan. Tmobile offer new even 2 plan that offer no contract, just take this phone to store had it activated, the plan is about $10 less for the same feature except you don't get phone discount. but best you can cancel anytime. Depend where you work, many place aleady offer wifi, like college. of course on the road wifi won't work.

Dreaming answer is no, google navigation will be exclusive for android phone, plus nokia aleady has decent map navigation, why would nokia paid money for google while they aleady had a map navigation. Google nav is still beta stage, and you has to use network data.

Does Nokia's supplied map app have turn by turn voice or do you have to pay for that? And does its app not use network data like a standard GPS? While I'm interested in the desktop browsing and divx playback, I really wish phones wouldn't nickel and dime you everywhere. 32GB is more than enough to install maps, POIs, speech, etc. and just use the onboard GPS to track using the installed maps. No need to charge monthly fees and what not when standard GPS units can be had for $80 (or even lower) without monthly fees. I mean it's $600 for the farking phone and they still want to charge you more? Props to google for offering their service for free even if it uses network data (it's a start).

that's a good question actually. from what i've seen, navigation/routing is free but there's no voice navigation. (edit: or turn-by-turn nav)

Dell's shipping dates are usually off for the better. As I recall, that date was a ship by date and Dell is usually pretty good about shipping before then.

I also got a call from dell to confirm my billing address, the rep said that the phone will be shipped 3 to 4 days. It looks like the phone isn't listed on the web site anymore :confused:

I don't know, thats what the rep said to me before ending the call, made me scratch my head but if you account for the transit time should come on release day or couple days after.
