Attention college students!
1 year Free Amazon Prime membership

Did a search and couldn't find this:

www.amazon.com/student

Requires:
-Valid .edu e-mail address
-Specify college, year and major
Quote:

To sign up for and use Amazon Student, you must (1) have an Amazon.com account, (2) be a college student actively enrolled in at least one course at a college geographically located in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia, (3) be able to provide proof of enrollment upon request and (4) have a valid e-mail address that contains the domain suffix .edu.
Go here to Sign Up [amazon.com]

Everything else is self-explanatory. Go to prime and manage your account. Should be activated and have an ending date 1 year from sign-up date. You are even able to add family members to the account like a regular prime subscription.

Updates to answer questions

Q: Will this automatically renew?
A: NO!
Quote:

The automatic renewal provisions in the Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions (which would require you to pay for Amazon Prime) do not apply to this membership, even if we decide to extend the free Amazon Prime offer beyond one year.
Q: Can I get this if I'm not a student (even if I have a .edu e-mail address)?
A: You might be able to. And you might not.
If you do not qualify and they catch you, Amazon will make you reimburse them for their costs
Quote:

If you do not provide documentation indicating that you meet the eligibility requirements above, you may be required to reimburse us for benefits you received as a result of your Amazon Student membership.
*I am not the arbiter of morality, but please don't abuse this by signing up if you do not meet Amazon's requirements*

Q: What happens if I already have a prime account?
A: I'm not sure, however people are reporting that if they currently have a prime account and they sign-up for the Amazon Student account, the following happens:
1. Their current prime account gets cancelled and they get a pro-rated refund
2. They get signed up for the free 1 year amazon student prime

Q: My .edu address isn't my Amazon.com address -- do I have to create a new account?
A: No
Quote:

If your .edu e-mail address isn't listed on your Amazon.com account, that's OK. The only e-mail we'll send to your .edu e-mail address is the verification e-mail. After that, other Amazon Student e-mails will be sent to the e-mail address listed on your Amazon.com account.
Q: Ohh my gosh, this is amazing, how can I thank you!?!?!
A: Students are notoriously poor. Many have to work minimum-wage jobs while taking classes to pay for rent, tuition and food. Let a student know about this deal and help them save money. Also, donating old books you have lying around the house to schools and libraries (especially those dealing with budget cuts) could potentially enrich a child's life and help them get interested in many different subjects and put them on the path to higher education.

"Join Amazon Student and get FREE Two-Day Shipping for one year with a free Amazon Prime membership ($79 value), as well as e-mail alerts for exclusive promotions. There is no cost to join--simply sign up by providing your school and major. If you’re not a student, you may still be eligible for a free trial of Amazon Prime."

Conditions for the curious (from Terms and Conditions)
T&C [amazon.com]

EDIT: This is really crazy!! Almost 2750 thumbs ups and counting! -- Over 3900 reps (I started with only 17!) Thanks everyone for all the support!

Here's the back story of how this deal came about: My sister-in-law really wanted a prime account since their's had just ended a short time go. She kept asking if I wanted to split one with her and my other siblings, but the rest of us weren't so keen on the idea because we didn't have that much of a need for it.

Fast forward to yesterday afternoon, she calls me and tells me about this Amazon Student thing and asks if I've ever heard of it. I told her no and did a search on slickdeals and google and couldn't find a thing on it. I went to the website she gave me and saw that you get Prime free for a year if you're a student, etc. etc. I verified it worked and that you could add family members to the account.

As soon as that happened, I posted it here since I've been a member for a while, but never posted a deal before (everyone is really quick on the uptake for this kind of stuff so by the time I find out about something, it's probably been on here for days already). I wanted to give back to everyone and this was the perfect opportunity.

The rest as they say, is history (1 day old history!)

575rider 07-12-2010 02:14 PM

Damn. This has the makings of a superthread. NICE!

Leonidas 07-12-2010 02:14 PM

Hot damn worked !! Repped +4. One year free Prime is unbelievable. This is going to be one of the threads of the year.

Oh you can't abuse this system. You have to choose your school form the list and they send you an email to your school email. You don't have to create a new Amazon account, existing works (even if you had a prime trial before). Autralia.edu won't work.

Olthoi 07-12-2010 02:15 PM

This took like 4 minutes to do and worked instantly. Awesome!

Chantastify 07-12-2010 02:15 PM

awesomeness to the max!

20LEGEND 07-12-2010 02:15 PM

Any idea when this offer expires?
Edit: (I mean registration).

(And thanks a gazillion!)

I assume this is a new program? If so, maybe I should hold off on signing up till my next order (trying to milk every day possible)? Makes sense unless signups are closed later

I wouldnt risk it, I would sign up now, you never know when this offer will disappear.

stephsully 07-12-2010 02:16 PM

I had also never heard about it before today either. Sister-in-law told me about it (she was looking to sign up for prime) and knew I was a student so let me know.

I would assume that this is a brand new program since I also did a google search and didn't see anything about it anywhere. This just might be an exclusive!

If someone has prime already and signs-up, please let everyone know what it does to your current membership (i.e. extends it out) and update the wiki

Sure you can, if you are a former student with a .edu account you could still acquire the email without being currently at the college. Although I will not do this because it is against Amazon's terms and I rather not be raped by their legal department.

Woah.

So I've been paying for my Amazon Prime account for two years now, saw this and thought I'd sign up for fun, in case it did anything for those that already have Prime accounts.

It does.

They canceled my Prime account, refunded me for my remaining time (I think this year's up in a few months for me) and then sent a welcome email for Amazon Student.

Impressive. TU!

I think you'd do better not to publish that fact or brag about it as it may well work it's way back to Amazon and make life difficult for the legitimate students. Let's not let greed hurt a population that deserves a break.

If you sign up while logged into your Amazon account, it cancels it for you automatically, sends you a refund for your remaining time and then signs you up for student, or at least it did for me.

Very cool!

I highly recommend you do not do this. To be honest, this is borderline fraud and it is a violation of the TERMS AND CONDITIONS set forth by amazon. Abusing the system is not a good idea, because you may ruin it for everyone who is actually eligible. That and if you are caught you will reimburse amazon for whatever benefits you got access to fraudulently as per what they said in their terms and conditions:rolleyes:.

You guys that aren't actually students are going to end up reimbursing Amazon when you get caught. Do you really think they aren't going to catch on to a bunch of people signing up with Australian .edu accounts? It specifically states that you have to be enrolled in a college located in the US.

CONDITIONS
To sign up for and use Amazon Student, you must (1) have an Amazon.com account, (2) be a college student actively enrolled in at least one course at a college geographically located in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia, (3) be able to provide proof of enrollment upon request and (4) have a valid e-mail address that contains the domain suffix .edu. We may accept or refuse membership in our sole discretion. We may ask you to furnish documentation supporting your eligibility. If you do not provide documentation indicating that you meet the eligibility requirements above, you may be required to reimburse us for benefits you received as a result of your Amazon Student membership. The Amazon Student membership is for personal use only and not for the purpose of resale. You may not transfer or assign your Amazon Student membership or the benefits associated with an Amazon Student membership.

i wonder why SD doesn't enforce a registration requirement for the forum? these deals deserve to be given to SD'ers and not lurkers.

TheAntiEggroll 07-12-2010 02:48 PM

God dammit I cant remember my old college email.

jmnumata 07-12-2010 02:48 PM

Ugh, I'm eligible, and just signed up for a prime account less than a month ago...

TechieSooner 07-12-2010 02:48 PM

Holy cow...
Best deal I've seen on here ever.

Thanks OP!

Meeza 07-12-2010 02:48 PM

OH MY LORDY, this is brilliant, I realize its technically only $80 bucks but free for students woohoo. This is probably the only useful thing I've gotten out of being a CSUF student =D

krayziejoe 07-12-2010 02:49 PM

so australia.edu has to be approved by an admin?

dreamexecution 07-12-2010 02:49 PM

yerrickc 07-12-2010 02:49 PM

Awesome!! Thank you!!!

lemontart 07-12-2010 02:49 PM

Yah, that's true about being caught with a australian.edu.......amazon is not stupid, they are going to fish out those email addresses I bet.....they will charge you for all your shipping and it would be valid cause you are violating the terms.

diamethuel 07-12-2010 02:49 PM

this is like, the most awesome thing ever.

dblade48 07-12-2010 02:49 PM

Anyone know how long they're offering this? (As in when will they rescind the deal?)

BaroksaLA 07-12-2010 02:49 PM

Thanks SD. You finally gave me a reason to go back to college. Thanks OP. Repped! Wohoooooo

will403536 07-12-2010 02:49 PM

How long do you guys figure this will last? I usually only use Amazon for textbooks and random items so I might hold out until fall semester starts up again.

mahdego 07-12-2010 02:50 PM

I dont want to sound gay or nothing... but I would give you a nice rub down for this man :P

The conditions specifically state that you have to be enrolled in a college that's geographically located within the 50 states or DC. They've probably already caught on to the fact that they're getting lots of registrations with australia.edu email addresses.

My school has a cap on how long they keep your email for after you leave the school *just an fyi* maybe urs doesn't, but my old college had a 9-month cap and then one day it was just deleted out of the blue.

THANKS OP!!! AMAZON PRIME FREE FOR 1 YEAR!!! REPPEDDDDDDDDDDD :whee:

VSPinkGirl 07-12-2010 02:51 PM

Does the free shipping only work on the items sold directly by amazon or does it count the items from other sellers as well (like used books)? tia

Seriously I doubt it tho... it is an option. As I put graduate then medical/health sciences

I was just curious if it was only a deal for undergrads, or if it was legit for grads too. Basically, I was trying to decide if I should lie about being an undergrad or be honest about being a grad. I chose the honesty route... see? law school teaches us about being good people and stuff

jcisking1 07-12-2010 02:51 PM

And I graduate in 17 days! Awesome!

This worked like a charm, best deal I have ever gotten on SD.

BTW.... I was already a prime member and as soon as I signed up and confirmed the student prime I got an email saying my old prime was cancelled and they were sending me a pro-rated refund of around $40. I checked my prime membership on Amazon to make sure Io hadn't been completely cancelled and sure enough it shows my membership goes until July 12 2011.

Thanks OP!

dont be a sissy, just create an account if you want.

Weird, the email didn't get forwarded from my .edu to my regular email like every other one. Interesting.
