I have this TV and its very nice, if you are brave and want to go into the service menu the USB port settings can be changed to allow it to play video files including MKV.

Good price also, lowest recent price was Frys at $499 + shipping or in store pickup with tax.

k1ngkev1n1 01-05-2011 03:41 PM

Got this tv from frys a little while ago for $450 plus tax. Im in california so tax killed me and recycling ended up paying about $525 for it and just picked it up. this is a good deal. the tv is great. havent had any problems with it.

vudabu 01-05-2011 03:46 PM

does anyone know if this is a ips panel?

Well, based on what you just said it's not a good deal at $549 then. It sounds like it would be a good deal at $499 shipped or FP at $450 shipped.

cyclecrazy 01-05-2011 03:50 PM

Its a good deal if you can't find it anywhere else lower right now

no its a good deal free shipping. I had to pick it up 40 miles away.

What a joke that true motion example is. If 60hz sets showed that much blur for football they would never have been put in the market.

source? I *WILL* buy this right now if this is true. I left my PS3 at home when I moved, and this would solve my media needs for awhile if I can play all my DL'd HD files on it.

This is not from LG and is considered a "hack" which could void a warranty or brick your TV if done wrong. Try at your own risk.

LH series I think.

IPS is a good selling point so sellers and manufacturers both will mention it in specs. They sometime put IPS in bold along the product description as well.

Hope that helps. I'm sure that we have posters here who are lot more knowledgeable than I am.

The 42LD520 was made with IPS and non IPS panels. The way to tell is to look at the serial number; the ones with a W in end numbers are IPS. I do not know if the non-ips panels are still being sold or not. I got an IPS in Nov.

So if on my serial the W is the fourth letter for the last than I have an IPS panel?

TheLizardking 01-05-2011 06:20 PM

so close to buying this tv, but it's about 1 inch too wide for my bedroom armoire. amazingly the 42LD550 (basically same tv with wi-fi and internet apps) is about an inch smaller and would fit, but is also about 150 bucks more. struggling with pulling that trigger.

From what I read on avs forums, even some with the W in the serial were not ips. The definitive way to tell is to take a look at your pixel pattern. You either have to have a really good camera to take a picture or have binoculars, lol. I posted my pixel pattern on avs and they said I have the ips panel.

I bought this tv from new egg in december for $549 shipped, then used the iron egg policy to price match fry's when they had this tv on sale for $529. I think this is a great tv, especially for the price.

If you can get it for the same price or cheaper than this IMO go with the Panasonic. If the Panasonic is more stick with the LG. Either way you will be happy. Amazon does have a free return policy.

I've been in the market for a TV and was looking at the 32" LED LG. However, this would give me a lot more TV for my money. I don't really need the bigger size, so should I jump on this or wait to get the 32 LED LG?

I'm pretty stupid when it comes to TVs.

IMHO LED has a superior image (at least all the ones I saw) but in the end it all depends on the eye of the viewer. I went TV shopping with my pops and while I could tell the difference between 60hz and 120hz he could not. Also, each specific TV is different even across specs. As the previous poster mentioned, LED is top price these days but if you look hard enough you could find a deal that might be worth the extra money to you. I suggest you hit up some stores and check out some TVs for yourself to get a better grip on exactly what you are looking for and how much the better picture is worth to you. I own this specific TV and I think it looks amazing. Also, bigger is better as long as it doesn't completely take over the room. Many people wish they went bigger when it is home all set up. Best of luck.

stimpy 01-06-2011 05:49 AM

Are we going into the LCD/LED vs Plas debate now?

I won a 42" plas from Slickdeals in Sept (thankyouthankyouthankyou) ... my livingroom is full of windows ... reflection is an issue. I still love mine 'cause it was free - but if I would have "saved a few bucks going with the plaz" I would be kicking myself ...

just sayin

XBLAddict 01-06-2011 06:02 AM

Awe damnit, I ran out of patience last week and bought another 42" at $599...

..and I got a ton of alerts on it as well as others have mentioned.

globalsaver 01-06-2011 07:28 AM

Also got many alerts on this topic and have seen this happen a couple of times before in the last couple of months, bots gone wild or what?

As far as the topic here, not to rabbit trail but really wishing the CFL backlights could be phased out faster and we could just skip to LED sooner

inetcruise 01-06-2011 11:56 AM

Not a bad deal...

It also has 178 degree angle so does that mean it's also IPS ?

I am wondering if that's the only reason why people are saying the panasonic is IPS because of 178. Seems like IPS should be way more expensive in reality judging by Dell panel prices.

many mva panels have 178/178 degree viewing angles

atwood7fan 01-10-2011 09:07 AM

Just wanted to comment that I got mine a week ago from newegg and it has a very nice picture. Viewing angles are only mediocre though as you lose a LOT of brightness viewing off-center (we are talking at least 45 degrees off center). Also I wish there was a button on the remote to turn truemotion on and off... there are buttons on the remote to quickly change the energy settings (though any energy saving mode beyond minimum is WAY too dark) and also a button to change AV picture mode. Since truemotion is supposedly a big feature, why does it take so many button presses to turn it on and off? Would be nice to swap quickly as it looks nice when watching sports but terrible when watching tv shows and movies.

I didn't check and am too lazy to look now since I mounted it up on the wall. I mean its fine as long as I am somewhat in front of the screen, but I swear I didn't notice a viewing angle problem at all with my old 32" sony 720p tv this one replaced. It's definitely not a deal breaker though.

Also I should mention the box was beat up all to hell when I got it. I am amazed the TV wasn't damaged.

Yeah, I had to buy 3 diff universal remotes but eventually got one that would do it. I don't remember the model #, but the $9 GE uni remote (cheapest at both best buy & target) did the trick just great. Also you only use it to press "2", you have to use the remote bundled with the tv to actually change the function.

I got one with a "W" in the number, but took a pic of the pixels close up an it doesn't appear to be the IPS pattern, so im not so sure about the W being a perfect indicator of what version you have. IPS or not, it's an incredible TV!!!

I confirmed mine as an IPS. I did a close up on the pixel and mines was good. Another way to make sure is to shine a flashlight into the middle vent in the back of the tv right above the stand. There is a sticker there which is the panel's model number. If you got a W in there then you should have the IPS. Mines read LG420WUG.
